Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilising the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family. The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza between the World Trade Center towers is transformed into the Emerald City, featuring nearly 400 dancers with three costume changes. Like all good musicals, the Quincy Jones arrangements are highly hummable long after viewing (especially the funky "Ease On Down the Road" and the inspirational "Brand New Day"). In an era before MTV, the camera stays nearly stationary as Ross and Lena Horne vocally soar through their numbers. Their stage-like performances successfully make the leap to film, making The Wiz a testament to their singing talents and star presence. The then-thirtysomething Ross raised some eyebrows playing the traditionally teenaged Dorothy, but she and her supporting cast (including Richard Pryor as the Wiz) carry the tunes with an infectious verve that will appeal to folks of all ages. --Shannon Gee

In this Sidney Lumet-directed Motown rendition of The Wizard of Oz, Diana Ross plays a soulful Dorothy, accompanied by a cast peppered with R&B stars such as Michael Jackson, Roberta Flack and Luther Vandross.

4.0 out of 5 stars the wiz 8 April 2009
This is a wonderful film with great music, it is very different to the original but just as good. It is very 70s (something good )very colourful with some funky music that the whole family will love, as mine did "easy on down the road" and "Im a mean ole lion are my childrens favourite but I like the "crow anthem" by Michael Jackson. Diana Ross, Richard Prior, Michael Jackson and Nipsey Russell are all wonderful it was a delight to watch. Certianly one for all the family. If you are a fan of the original (as I am)you will enjoy this different take on what is a wonderful film .We watched it over and over and have learnt all the songs . Brilliant.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not THE One! 14 Jan 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Unfortunately, as much as I love this film, it is just the normal DVD version.
It dosen't have any of the 'Behind the scenes', 'Blooper Reels', or special features on here.
It is what it is......JUST the film!!
I am still looking for a Special/Collectors Edtion of this film,as I do love it so.
On the flip side, you do get to see MJ & the fabulous Dianna Ross giving rare, non glamorized, performance's.In other words:Pure, before all the Hollywood hype.
Their version of the Yellow Brick Rd song,is a funky get-up-on-your feet, groove-on-down track which you'll be singing for days after you've watched it.As I did when I first saw this film YEARS ago, and still do now.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Wiz 18 Sep 2010
By Alison
i have The Wiz, but its not the Commenmorative edition, but i can't see how this is differnt. anyway, Michael is amazing in this, he could have been such a great actor too - incidentally he is the only good actor in the film, didn't think acting was Diana Ross' forte, didn't think much of her at all actually, its Michael Jackson that makes the film any good and thats an objective opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soul Funk soundtrack sets your toes tapping! 28 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Thsi video is excellent! Anybody with a love of good music will love this contempory remake of the classic 1939 film. In particular, songs such as "Ease on Down the Road" and "You Can't Win" will have you tapping those toes, or maybe even dancing around you living room! Some of the acting leaves something to be desired, but the excellent and funny script makes up for that. You will pity the Lion, dance along with Dorothy and laugh with the Crows, so if you love musicals this is the film for you!
