Product Description

The second story about the March family.

Three years on from Little Women, the March girls and their friend Laurie are young adults with their futures ahead of them. Although they all face painful trials along the way - from Meg's sad lesson in housekeeping to Laurie's disappointment in love and a tragedy which touches them all - each of the girls finally finds happiness, if not always in the way they expect.

About the Author

Louisa May Alcott (1832–88) was brought up in Pennsylvania, USA. She turned to writing in order to supplement the family income and had many short stories published in magazines and newspapers. Then, in 1862, during the height of the American Civil War, Louisa went to Georgetown to work as a nurse, but she contracted typhoid. Out of her experiences she wrote Hospital Sketches (1864) which won wide acclaim, followed by an adult novel, Moods.

She was reluctant to write a children's book but then realized that in herself and her three sisters she had the perfect models. The result was Little Women (1868) which became the earliest American children's novel to become a classic

"Good Wives" is the delightful conclusion to "Little Women", in which all four girls of the March family find peace and happiness after work and effort.
I found it a lot more tragical than the first book, owing, I think, to the characters being older . Anyway, many parts of the book will make you beam with pleasure when, for example, you see how the March girls get over their faults and fight to improve.
Meg is now happily married, though she learns that nothing can be perfect; Jo is quite successful with her published written works, but she still has some important worries in her mind; Amy has turned into a graceful charming lady although Beth has yet no ambition.
Although it may make your eyes fill with tears, this book has also its happy moments and I'm sure you will learn many lessons that will turn very useful throughout your life.

A lovely sequel 16 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Good Wives picks up a few months after Little Women closes. Meg is about to get married and the other girls are on the brink of womenhood. It isn't all plain sailing though as the hopes and dreams of the girls aren't realised exactly as they thought they would be and tragedy strikes. I must have read this book a thousand times and I cry every time. Having said that, it is a heartwarming book and I every time I read it, I enjoy it even more!

classic! 28 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I only read 'little women' latley to catch up on classics that I missed out on when i was small. When i had finished the book (and the box of tissues) I went online in hysterics to find out if there was any more! You can imagine my glee when i found out that there was. Good wives tells of the unexpected continuation of the 4 March girls and it leaves you wanting more (and there is, luckily). It's still a classic so if you're not into innocent then stay away but if you're able to take a book which drips morals here and there without cringing then the storyline is worth it. WARNING : DO NOT READ THIS BOOK BEFORE 'LITTLE WOMEN'!!
