Book Description

5 Mar 1999
Did you know that banana skins, laid just below the surface of the soil, have long been said to be beneficial for roses, and that horticulturists now approve the practice? Or that mulching strawberries with pine needles will improve their flavor? Or that hollyhocks thrive on beer? Maureen and Bridget Boland have been collecting garden wisdom for many years, both from "old wives" and from books ancient and modern. In this charming little volume, they pass on the best of their store of useful and curious information. It will be seized upon with delight by all gardeners who are not afraid of finding a sprinkling of superstition mingled with much good sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book 4 Dec 2011
This is a wonderful book. It's quite small, neatly produced and neatly written. There are about a hundred paragraphs of ideas about things that might or might not be good for your garden: beer, beef, old shoes, hair, cats, marigolds, nettles. It's great if you like gardening and would also be good as a gift for a young writer interested in how to convey information concisely. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars good tips come in small packages! 14 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
We recently aquired an allotment and had to clear it of all the weeds, seeded veggies and couch grass etc. This little book was suggested on a website we found as essential reading...and essential it is! It has great tips for companion planting, and some wonderful tips for growing all sorts of plants. A clear concise and fun way of picking up tips from two (NOT) old wives!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for organic growers! 31 Jan 2006
By A Customer
If you're into organic gardening, you need this book. Given it's a bit older than most organic gardening books (1976), there's plenty of tips which seem to have been lost over the years. It's not actually striving to be 'organic', just doing things the way they were done before chemicals.
