Book Description

A creepy, claustrophobic thriller set in small-town America, from the author of the acclaimed Summer of the Cicada

Product Description

On the surface Joseph Pullman seems to have left his unhappy childhood far behind: as the town undertaker and a council member, he is now a respected citizen of Henderson, Maryland. But Joe's father is in jail for the brutal murder of a young boy and despite his wife's questions, Joe can't - or won't - talk about his past.

When his wife disappears, and a woman's severed hand is found inside a glove, Joe decides it's finally time to confront his past. Only to discover that his past has beaten him to it...

Having read Will Napier's first book Summer of the Cicada, it was with great anticipation and excitement that I picked up Without Warning.

At first I had wondered what had taken so long to get the second book out, but after the first few pages - and reuniting with the thoughts of Joe - all was forgiven.

From the opening line I was engaged in the world of Joe Pullman. What self-induced misfortune was going to fall upon this annoyingly likable conniver?

It was an enjoyable change of scene and for once things looked like they had turned around for Joe, but I just could not wait until it all started to unravel... and unravel it does!

This new book is maybe not as hard hitting as the first, but it is none the less an enjoyable and thought-provoking read. The characters are beautifully depicted and easily etched into the mind. The thoughts of Joe Pullman are masterful and the whole book is very vivid. The interaction and dialogue between the characters is like watching a movie unfolding before your eyes.

This book does indeed have a feeling like it could have been written for the big screen but this does not take away from the writers literary talents. On the contrary, I believe it shows the versatility and intellect of a writer with a very promising future.

My only concern is how long it will take Napier to get another of his books in my hands.

The main character, Joe, is quite something but somehow the story doesn't flow properly. Bits and pieces of past history of a bad childhood and a new beginning but it doesn't pull together until the end.
