Since buying this album a few days ago, I have done nothing but listen to it over and over again!

Sonny's amazing skill, tone and feeling are evident, as he plays just a few days after being evacuated from his home a few blocks away from the world trade center. This is when Sonny is at his best. He can show his feelings through his saxophone and it's obvious his feelings at this time were strong.

The CD starts with 'Without a song' - one of the best versions i've heard in a long time.
From then on you're treated to improvisations by Clifton Anderson on trombone, Stephen Scott on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, Perry Wilson on drums, Kimati Dinizulu on percussion, and, of course, the great man himself.

This is a great CD, and is definitely worth a listen........

Lift Your Spirits 23 Feb 2006

A Sonny Rollins gig is more than just a concert. There is a sense of occasion before the start, and by the end of the evening you've had an uplifting experience.

This CD is a case in point. Rollins has a special way with the old songs and "Nightingale" and "Why was I Born?" are specially thrilling. As usual, Sonny Rollins builds some of his monumental solos. Stephen Scott's piano style has solos which have an element of construction, unlike the rather aimless soloing in which some newer pianists indulge.

Clifton Anderson (Rollins's nephew) does his usual sound job providing background support, rather like a big band backing a soloist.

Sonny Rollins is back in UK in May 2006. Don't miss it! I just wish Bob Cranshaw would use a real double bass sometimes.
