This CD is a case in point. Rollins has a special way with the old songs and "Nightingale" and "Why was I Born?" are specially thrilling. As usual, Sonny Rollins builds some of his monumental solos. Stephen Scott's piano style has solos which have an element of construction, unlike the rather aimless soloing in which some newer pianists indulge.
Clifton Anderson (Rollins's nephew) does his usual sound job providing background support, rather like a big band backing a soloist.
Sonny Rollins is back in UK in May 2006. Don't miss it! I just wish Bob Cranshaw would use a real double bass sometimes.
