With This Kiss:

Beauty and the beast: they were the scandal of the ton.

All eyes feasted on the beautiful flame-haired gambler in London’s most infamous club. But Julia Prentisse was interested only in the rake-turned-recluse whom they now called “The Beast.” She lured him out of the crowded gaming hell to a deserted warehouse, where she made her scandalous offer: If he married her and protected her from her uncle, she would help him capture the arsonist who had ruined his life.

An act of heroism had left Morgan St.James burned, scarred for life, but Julia’s bold gaze lit other fires he had long suppressed. And now this glorious stranger was his bride. But when he tried to claim his husbandly rights, she demanded three months grace—three months to know a stranger’s mind, to touch a stranger’s soul, to go where no woman had ever gone before. Into his heart…

An Interview with Victoria Lynne:

Tell us about Morgan St. James. What motivates him?

Although the events of his past paint Morgan as a brooding outcast, that’s not really a role he shoulders easily. He’s hard and cynical enough to play the part, but that’s not truly who he is. Scarred physically and emotionally, he withdraws into his sheltered estate, away from the busy whirl of London society. Julia slowly draws him out of his shell. Although he resists her at first, he slowly comes to recognize the light she breathes into his dark world.

Julia Prentisse sounds like a bold little spit-fire ~ what motivates her toward Morgan? Why Morgan?

Actually, Julia fell for Morgan the moment she saw him at her coming-out ball in London. (Unfortunately, the attraction wasn’t mutual. He doesn’t remember ever meeting her!) In any event, when Julia realizes she and Morgan can help each other put their lives back on course, she wastes no time contacting ‘The Beast’ with her outrageous proposal.

Please share anything about this story you’d like ~ maybe a difficult scene or character. Someone or something not cooperating…

A pivotal part of the plot is the hunt for the arsonist who is setting London ablaze. It was difficult to get into his skin without making the story too dark. It was important to me that the arsonist be a human character, not just a stereotypical evil villain. I hope I’ve succeeded!

Do you have anything you would like to say to readers?

Yes: Thank you! I am always thinking of readers whenever I sit down to write. I want them to enjoy reading my work as much as I love writing it. And I always love to hear from them- feel free to ‘like’ me on Facebook or contact me through email!

In 1855 London, Morgan St. James, Viscount Barlowe, arrives home, only to notice a fire in the servant's quarters. He shouts out a warning and enters the facility to try to rescue the trapped individuals. He manages to save a small child, but severely injures himself in the blaze that a serial arsonist set. Several children died in the blaze and Morgan is scarred (physically and emotionally) for life.

Two years later, Morgan, called the Beast, due to his visage, has virtually withdrawn from society. He has become obsessed with catching the serial arsonist, but has attained no leads. Meanwhile, Julia Prentiss anonymously authors the Tattler, a paper that highlights the plight of the poor. She tells Morgan that she receives a letter from the arsonist just before he sets a fire. She persuades Morgan to marry her. He gains knowledge on his quest to uncover the fire bug who has caused much destruction and death. She gains freedom. However, "Lazerus" as he calls himself will not sit idly by and watch his "Flame" be devoured by a sinner. Instead, he expects her to be at his side as he cleans the city with the wrath of his fire.

WITH THIS KISS is a well-designed Victorian romance that will thrill fans of the sub-genre plus those who take pleasure from a romantic intrigue. The story line combines authentic elements from the mid-nineteenth century and a who-done-it investigation that could have come from a mystery novel within a fairy tale romance. The lead protagonists are a daring duo, who bring much to the novel. The support cast adds period piece depth. Victoria Lynne provides historical romance fans with an entertaining tale worth reading.

Sometimes re-released books just don't work in more modern times, even if they're of historical genre, but this one definitely did for me. It's reasonably fast paced without any boring bits which a lot of romance novels seem to have just to pad them out. I'd finished it within a few days, although busy with other things.

Beginning in 1855, I really liked the two main characters. Julia Prentisse, beautiful, intelligent and full of integrity and Morgan St. James, Viscount Barlowe, practically a recluse, rich and powerful as well as stunningly handsome, despite his scars (both physical and emotional) from one of the fires set by Lazarus who is setting London ablaze.

Julia and Morgan quickly get together, driven by their joint desire to find the identity of Lazarus and Julia's need to escape her Uncle's power and his wish to see her married off to one of three repulsive characters.

The novel cleverly builds their relationship but also develops a good storyline around the arson attacks which have links back to both Julia and Morgan. A good ending which kept me guessing throughout the book. I Highly recommend this book and it won't be the last one I read by this author who I've only just discovered.

I enjoyed this book,as it was a change from my usual choice of genre.
It is a period romance with a bit of intrigue and arson.
The romance characters were strong and held my attention.
Would recommend this book to lovers of period romance.
