Phoenix Dye left Nottoway to pursue a career in law enforcement, not knowing that his girlfriend was pregnant. She tried to contact him, but was unable to do so; and therefore married someone else to ensure that her child had a father. A decade later, Phoenix returns home, to take on the job of town sherrif to find that he is a father to triplets and he finds this difficult to deal with. But what he doesn't know is that someone is out to kill him; and they will take any route, use any leverage, whatever the result to settle the score.
This story is a fairly straight forward love story, but with a few interesting twists. The character of Phoenix also has to work with the children that are his, but without them knowing. In a small town, this is not easy and leads to various levels of conflict between the characters.
I will say that this is one that will probably appeal more to women than men. I also felt that there were places were the author could have developed the characters a little more; they clearly have some complex emotions to deal with and some additional backstory might have made for a better understanding of where the problems come from. But overall, not a bad story, and one that maden a decent read.
It's suitable for reading on a journey or a lazy Sunday afternoon.
