I devoured this tear jerking novel in 2 days - it's the best book I've read this year. To even attempt to review a book so beautifully written is to fall so far short of doing it any justice at all. It's littered with wonderful, poignant thoughts on love and relationships.

A woman with three young boys who, on the surface, is happily married, realises she's feeling tired and helplessly trapped in her life. She's lost interest in sex and feels fed up with the challenges of motherhood and its irritations. She wonders what's missing from her married life. 'Love should be empowering not eviscerating'. She longs to feel alive again and recalls the passion she experienced during an intense relationship as a teenager with an older man.

The middle half of the book reverts back in time to this passionate love affair and is very sensual, raw, erotic and poetic.

As an adult and a woman struggling with her loss of identity she revisits this relationship. Along the way she deals with other unresolved issues from her youth. She faces the grief she felt as a child whose father withheld his love, and she also forgives her stepmother's hatred -in part by simply accepting that they are totally different people.

Though revisiting the infatuated love of her younger days and learning about love between a parent and child she feels liberated and sees things in a new light. 'We have come to view life in its entirety, instead of agonisingly puzzling over its disjointed parts'. She feels empowered in middle age, there is a reawakening of her own sexuality and she shows her husband a sexual self she's never dared reveal before.

'Love vividly and with passion... We must wring as much happiness as we can out of life during our allotted time on this earth...Seize that happiness and be content with it'.

I chose this novel after reading the five star reviews that others had written. I must say I enjoyed the book very much. The writing style was slightly different to others but very well written, descriptive and flowing. A lovely story of a young girl's awakening into love, relationships and sex and how it affects her later life, very touching at times, sad even, but thoroughly enjoyable. As others have said I found it unputdownable and read it within a couple of days. I am certainly looking forward to reading more from this author, I am sure I won't be disappointed. I definitely recommend this novel that well deserves its five stars.
