CD Description

* "With Love - A Pot Of Flowers" was originally issued in 1967 by Mainstream Records ostensibly to cash-in upon the growing fascination with San Francisco. In 1966, label boss Bob Shad had issued several unsuccessful singles by Bay Area groups, and by collecting them together on LP he unwittingly created one of the more satisfying surveys of the scene at the time.

* The groups included on "A Pot Of Flowers" were the Wildflower, pioneering folk-rockers who were an early fixture at the Fillmore and Avalon; San Jose's popular garage band the Otherside; legendary East Bay punks the Harbinger Complex; and, from southern California, the idiosyncratic Euphoria, whose off-beat take on psychedelia has given the group a cult reputation.

* Doubling the album's original tracklist, Big Beat adds a swathe of rare material, including folk-rock and proto-psych sides by associated West Coast acts such as the New Dawn, Word, Ariel and Unusuals, and several stellar unissued garage rockers from the Ban and Montells. Detailed liner notes provide context with both the group's individual histories and an overview of Mainstream's activities on the West Coast.

In the wake of the English Invasion, label owner Bob Shad criss-crossed the US, scouring the local scenes for the "next big thing" and signing up numerous hopefuls for one-shot deals to his various labels (Mainstream, Brent, Shad, and Time). Viewed retrospectively, he struck a rich vein of talented bands; however few of them had, or would go on to have, commercial success at the time (Big Brother and The Holding Co. and The Amboy Dukes/Ted Nugent being the exceptions).

A Pot Of Flowers was a snapshot sampler of Northern California's Bay Area scene
and has been a favourite with collectors of garage/psych since the 70s. A quartet of obscure garage bands - Euphoria, Harbinger Complex, The Other Side, and The Wildflower - provided a dozen tracks which evoke the sounds of 1966-67 and the crossover of garage-punk to psychedelia.

As with previous volumes in his "Nuggets From The Golden State" series on Big beat, researcher Alec Palao has done a magnificient job. He presents the story behind the LP and the bands in a booklet crammed with painstakingly researched details and photos. No less than fourteen bonus tracks have been added; these comprise mono single versions of four of the LP tracks plus ten tracks by related/other Bay Area bands (Ariel, Ban, Montells, New Dawn, Thee Unusuals, The Word) - six released on Mainstream/Brent 45s and four previously unreleased.
Unreservedly recommended, even if you have the original LP.

Nuggets From The Golden State 19 Aug 2010

This album is a true collectors item as it was originally released in Oct 1967 on Mainstream Records showcasing the labels Garage and Psychedelic Folkrock from the SF Bay area. An added bonus is 14 extra songs from Mainstream and Brent Records to fill out the album and a 24 page booklet included. If you like the San Francisco sound circa 1966 then you will enjoy this record with love.

Where Are My Love Beads? 14 Dec 2011

This is the real thing, flower power snippets of sixties aural memorabilia. I like all the songs on here, which span a broad sylistic gamut. A good choice for anyone interested in sixties-era pop music. This was apparently a sampler put out back in the sixties, so there's an authenticity here that should not be dismissed, and a bunch of songs have been addded to what was the original album, which is cool. This is what you'd expect from a compilation with both "Love" and "Flowers" in the title (not to mention "Pot," though I guess I just mentioned it).
