Following the death of her father, seventeen year old Ashley moves from London to live with her aunt and uncle who run a small hotel in the north of England. There she attracts the attention of her cousin's friend, the dark attractive and wealthy Jake Seton whose background could not be more removed from hers and who is engaged to the sophisticated Barbara who he has known since childhood. This is a well scripted Anne Mather romance to curl up with and forget about the daily humdrum.

I think this is probably my favourite Mills & Boon of all time. Written in the early seventies,it is deliciously old-fashioned. But how could you not fall in love with a hero who wears a dark blue velvet suit and frilled dress shirt? Superb. I demand that the wonderful Anne Mather writes a book about Jake and Ashley's offspring for the modern day.
