An interesting life 23 July 2009
I bought this book because we met the author, Elena Davis, at an English National Opera performance in London recently. We started talking and discovered that she had first visited Mallorca in 1955. By coincidence it was in the same year, 54 years ago to the day, that we first visited the island, on our honeymoon. So when she told us about her book we naturally obtained a copy. The book describes her experiences over that long period, during which the island has changed out of all recognition. It is presented as a series of snapshots, covering a variety of different aspects, Mallorcan society, her work, her personal contacts, the Spanish legal system and so on. Elena Davis has a lively personality and was interesting to talk to. After that the most astonishing fact given in her book is in its last sentence, which reads, "Not only have I never regretted my decision to come to live and to remain on this beautiful island, but looking back over ninety-one years (!!!) I can reiterate that the decision was the best I have made during my lifetime". We should be delighted if any way could be found of conveying our thanks and congratulations to Elena.

Fascinating! 22 Feb 2011
I concur with the three previous reviews, and although I do agree with the first review regarding style, the content of the book is so fascinating that it is a 'must read' for anyone who is interested in Mallorca for its many qualities, the least being a package holiday destination! This lady has had an amazing life, one of fun and adventure. We too have had the pleasure of meeting Elena, and she is one remarkable lady who I wish I had met years ago. I read her book before meeting her, and when I did encounter her I considered it a real honour! She is one lovely lady with a captivating tale to tell! Order the book now!
