"The Witch From The Sea" is a somewhat sombre and mystery-ridden successor to the lusty, brawling epic "Lion Triumphant". When I first began reading it I thought the author was making the mistake of having a story too similar, in that Linnet, like her feisty mother Catherine, is both attracted and repelled by the man of her dreams. The difference is that whereas Jake Pennlyon had a certain childlike loveableness about his rough-and-ready ways, Colum Casvellyn is a thoroughly unscrupulous and unpleasent piece of work.

Colum is the owner of Castle Paling, near Falmouth in Cornwall, and is feared throughout the neighbourhood for his dastardly, feudal ways. He abducts Linnet in the country lanes and takes her back to his castle. Having, to use a very old-fashioned term, "compromised her honour", Linnet has no choice but to marry him. She thinks his domineering attitude is like her father's, but learns too late that Colum is very much a dark side of the coin. He earns his vast wealth by luring ships onto the rocks and plundering them, what was known in the old days as "wreckers", and what we would know as mass murderers.

This is the first of the Cornish settings in Philippa Carr's series, and it is brought beautifully to life. The castle, the shipwrecks, the witchcraft, the beautiful but sinister Spanish maiden whom Linnet rescues from the waves, are all incredibly evocative of a colourful and violent era in English history. After Linnet dies an untimely death it is left to her gentler daughter, Tamsyn, to try and find out what happened. Another triumph.

Philippa Carr is a beloved author known to many by her other pen names, Victoria Holt and Jean Plaidy. A mistress of romantic suspense, as well as a masterful storyteller, this is the third in a series of about nineteen books by her in which she tracks a family throughout successive generations. One need not start at the beginning, as each one of the books can stand alone.

Although somewhat formulaic, these books still have the power to keep the reader turning the pages. This one is set in Elizabethan England and tells the story of a young woman, Linnet Pennlyon, who is on the brink of becoming betrothed to one man, only to find herself forced to marry another, the rakish Colum Casvellyn, when circumstances intervene to change her fate.

Her passionate relationship with her husband changes over time, when Linnet discovers some secrets about her husband that she would have been better off not knowing. Moreover, when a stunningly beautiful stranger is cast upon the shores of the their castle, Linnet's life is never again the same. It is then left to her daughter, Tamsyn, to set to right what once went wrong.

Those who love the genre of romantic suspense, as well as fans of Ms. Carr, Mary Stewart, Anya Seton, Norah Lofts, and Phyllis Whitney, will, undoubtedly, enjoy this book, as well as the others in this entertaining generational series of books.

After being drugged and raped, Linnet finds herself forced to marry her attacker whose castle home hides many dark secrets.

Unfortunately, this book tends to reinforce the stereotype that women invite and deep down enjoy being raped. I'm not intending to be politically correct. Sexual assault has always gone on, and it's not improper for it to be written about. However the author writes about it in such a way that it reads as titillation. A shame as the plot contains a few good twists. But the beginning casts a heavy shadow over the rest of the book. Not recommended.
