Product Description

Synopsis

The cowardly but evil Baron de La Braunch wants desperately to rid himself of his wife and her son so he can marry the enchanting Lady Alwena. He enlists the aid of the hideous Hag of Ravensworth, a wicked witch who has sold her soul to demons in exchange for supernatural power. The witch leads the Baron deeper and deeper into depravity and murder, leading to a startling and unforgettable conclusion! First published in 1808 and long out of print, The Witch of Ravensworth is a masterful blend of Gothic horror, fairy tale, and bizarre dark humour. George Brewer's grotesque Witch is the clear precursor to later Gothic literary monsters like Frankenstein and Dracula. This edition features a new introduction and notes for modern readers, as well as the complete text of contemporary reviews.

4.0 out of 5 stars Original Horror:worth reading, 22 Jun 2009
By X. Gallagher "jesusonarubbercross" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Picking up a slim volume of 200 year old horror does not grab ones fancy lightly. We are used to over indulgent (read 'long') texts where the modern author follows a stream on consciousness and produces books that lose the plot in exchange for the minutest detail of what fluff was in which navel on the night of the 12th, at 1:23am. Equally difficult is the belief that old writing can be good, despite the legacy of Chaucer and Shakespeare (allegedly, I don't read that stuff).

So imagining a good story can be told in 98 pages (which these days can count as a 'short' story rather than novella) when filled with archaic language can be difficult to believe.

The story is written in a concise voice. Description is generally sparse, with some noteworthy exceptions. The author focuses on description when it is a key part of the tale, setting the scene with precision, but for the rest describes events in an engagingly factual tone. The evil of the witch, her wretched existence, her self pity all come through brilliantly. The decadence, greed, and ambition of the main villains (because the hag is not a central character) is also convincing.

And the plot is good. It does have twists and turns, it does engage, and I did find myself resenting work because I did want to know how it ended, and work just got in the way.

So, in the unlikely event anyone reads this review (this is not a big seller), the book isn't a gamble for those who like horror. The archaic somewhat language is manageable, and I'll give it 4 stars.
