...and above all, don't make a wish., 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: Wishmaster Boxset [DVD] (DVD)
I have watched the first two Wishmaster movies several times so this was an ideal way to catch up on the whole series, although probably not at some of the prices currently being quoted.
The first movie Wishmaster starts off in ancient Persia as the Djinn tricks the king into making a wish that leads to the death of most of his court before he is trapped inside a large opal. Cut to modern day America when an ancient statue is being offloaded at dockside, the crate falls on Ted Raimi (one of a series of cameo roles by horror icons). The statue breaks releasing the jewel which is pawned by an opportunist worker, the jewel is sent to be examined and our ancient demon is released and goes in search of the person who freed it so he can grant them three wishes. In the meantime he grants individual wishes to a series of unlucky individuals who soon realise that the Djinn interprets the wishes in his own way leading to some grisly deaths, with each wish granted he becomes more powerful and more human in appearance.
Once he has settled into his pursuit of Alexandra (Tammy Lauren) to grant her three wishes and so release his demon kin who are trapped in another dimension
It's a solid entertaining horror movie and Andrew Divoff is splendid as the evil Djinn, the make up effects of the horned creature are also pretty impressive. What makes it work is the black humour which is in abundance here and is present throughout the series but the first two movies stand out for me. Many of the cameo roles from the likes of Robert Englund, Reggie Bannister, Tony Todd, Kane Hodder etc are quite funny and the commentary is by Angus Scrimm from the Phantasm series.
On the extras side there's trailers and an informative 24 minute documentary featuring director Robert Kurtzman, writer Peter Atkins memers of the effects team and Andrew Divoff as well as a commentary by Kurtzman and Atkins on the main feature.
Wishmaster 2 sees Divoff reprise his role as the Djinn. When an armed robbery at a museum ends in tragedy with a guard being killed during a gunfight during which Morgana (Holly Fields) is shot at, the bullet however misses her and splits the opal freeing the Djinn. To stop Morgana going to jail he admits responsibility for the crime and ends up in prison where he has great fun granting wishes to hardened criminals who soon regret it.
When he breaks out of prison he searches for Morgana to make her take her three wishes, the last scene in a casino where the house wishes all its customers luck is good fun.
There's very little in the way of extras here.
Wishmaster 3: Devilstone (aka Beyond The Gates of Hell) sees a new Djinn in the form of an over amorous college teacher (Jason Connery) seeking to grant three wishes to Diana (Alyssa Jane Cook) who releases the jewel from a Hellraiser style puzzle box.
Unfortunately Connery's human version of the Djinn isn't a patch on Divoff, the creature effects are still good but the movie hasn't the impact of the first two. The introduction of the Archangel Michael who helps our heroes fight against the Djinn doesn't quite work, there are some humorous touches though and brief nudity.
There are no extras.
Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy fulfilled completes the cycle and sadly is the weakest of the 4 as the Djinn grants Lisa (Tara Spencer-Nairn) three wishes, the last of which presents the Djinn with a real problem. Although the idea is good the movie just never gets into its stride, even with the Djinn's demon brothers are on the verge of being free to unleash destruction on the world. There's a boringly overlong scene in a strip club that appears to be there solely to pad the story out and give a fire-eater some screen time. To be honest Tara Spencer-Nairn is the only reason to watch this movie.
There are no extras.
The first two movies are great, I've seen the original several times and still enjoy it, the last two I save for when I am really bored.
