My two adopted children (4 and 6 years) love this book - and so do I. It is a lovely picture book where the premise is a young adopted bear asking his mother questions about why she adopted him.
It really describes well the longing an adoptive mother can have for a child (left vague so it could be a baby being adopted or a young child) and the joy she has when one is found, but written at a level that even young children can understand - which then has the benefit that they feel special in their adoption rather than "odd". It even covers mixed race issues as the son asks whether it matters that he looks different to his mother - but it is not so intrusive to be a big issue where that is not relevant.
Some reasons why it might not be suitable for your circumstances:
- the mother asks God to help find a child for her - obviously if you are not religious this may be a problem for you;
- very good at encouraging mother / child bonding not so good for father / child bonding - the father doesn't figure at all;
- best of all when only one child is adopted - possibly not so good when a second child has been adopted at a later date - but there again we make it work for our two and it doesn't semem to bother them;
- I don't think it is one for non-adopted children to learn about adoption, it seems to me to be too personal on the bond. Non-adopted children may feel they have missed out!
Top tip: read it through yourself before trying to read it to them. It so hit the nerve as to how I had felt that I was reduced to tears the first time I read it. The children may grow out of this book - I don't think I ever will.
