I too remember being very disappointed when I first heard this album on vinyl and it was stored away in the "make up the collection" pile. Yet through the plethora of live albums that the band has released I grew to like a number of the songs from the album, Sorrell, Ballad of the Beacon, Doctor, Rock and Roll Widow. Thinking I had misjudged it on earlier listenings I returned to 4, this time on CD. Sadly, it was still lacking. I'm not quite sure what went wrong, there are some very good tracks (see above) and the others aren't too bad. It really must be the original production. Both the vinyl and CD versions sound lumpen with none of the sparkle you normally get from the twin guitars in harmony. It is a pity as Sorrell and Ballad of the Beacon in particular are great songs and show up well live.
I gather there will soon be a new remastered copy of this album out. Hopefully something will be done to add some sparkle to the tracks. So all in all, I think this is a much maligned album but certainly they could (and would) do better
