As a Wishbone Ash Album, 4 always seems to get a very mixed reaction. Yes, some of the rocky tracks are somewhat lackluster (I think it's the production rather than the songs) and No Easy Road really dosen't work. Doctor is so-so. However, Ballad of the Beacon and Rock and Roll Widow make this album really worth while (and I quite like Everyone Needs a Friend). It's a shame that the CD mastering is really poor (seems to get worse as the album progresses - has something happened to the master tape?) Maby someday someone will do a decent job.

I too remember being very disappointed when I first heard this album on vinyl and it was stored away in the "make up the collection" pile. Yet through the plethora of live albums that the band has released I grew to like a number of the songs from the album, Sorrell, Ballad of the Beacon, Doctor, Rock and Roll Widow. Thinking I had misjudged it on earlier listenings I returned to 4, this time on CD. Sadly, it was still lacking. I'm not quite sure what went wrong, there are some very good tracks (see above) and the others aren't too bad. It really must be the original production. Both the vinyl and CD versions sound lumpen with none of the sparkle you normally get from the twin guitars in harmony. It is a pity as Sorrell and Ballad of the Beacon in particular are great songs and show up well live.
I gather there will soon be a new remastered copy of this album out. Hopefully something will be done to add some sparkle to the tracks. So all in all, I think this is a much maligned album but certainly they could (and would) do better

I remember well when this album appeared. After the first three gems this seemed to confirm everyone's fears that Wishbone had gone for the dollar and sold out. Soon Ted Turner had left to seek flying saucers, and the end seemed nigh. On reflection, this is an underated work and should not be dismissed. But for those who grew up on Wishbone's triumvirate and traipsed to see them time after time, it was and is a disappointment. For collectors only. As for the CD quality, well, listen in your vehicle and it won't matter at all.
