Nice and Light 23 July 2007
Format:Paperback
Wish You Were Here was a very enjoyable read with a nice contrast between the 3 principal characters. I have not read a Mike Gayle book before and was attracted by a) the cover and b) the book summary - although the latter seemed very similar to another book I read a few years ago called You Are Here, also set in Crete and about a group of thirty something males on holiday; some of the observations are naturally very similar here although the feel of this book and general story and very different. Wish You Are Here has more of a chick-flick feel and is very driven by character conversation but it ultimately works. I ended up reading it in a rain bound cottage in Devon rather than on a med beach but it certainly kept my interest, especially when the main character, Charlie Mansell, sees his life become as tumultuous as it ever could in the final chapters and you really do end up caring about the outcome.

You Are Here Lite 7 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
Like a few other reviewers I straight away thought that this was going to be a 'You Are Here' rip off and read it with that curiosity in mind, having never read a Mike Gayle book before. To be honest it was ok, although a bit too easy going and dull in places and maybe it was a bit unfair to have the You Are Here comparison in mind as it did not have the same punch or cutting edge. Interesting never the less.

Brilliant! 2 July 2007
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my summer holiday read. However one again Mike Gayle has put my marking on hold while I have to finish his books!

It is an excellnt book, one that anyone who has been away with friends, or dumped! can relate too.

The book is based in Malia Crete, a resort I visited in 1989 and so that also made it even more interesting to read.

Somehow Mike seems to create characters that you know or have met.

Altogether 'unputdownable'.

This book was a good read, once I got into it.

I would have rated it as four stars, if the book had been properly proof read. Read more

"Recapturing youth"
A light read to bring abit a sunshine in on a rainy day. I enjoyed this book, perhaps not as good as some of Gayle's other books but it was worth a read.

Bit of a disappointment
Normally a great fan of Mike Gayle, and this was a pleasant enough couple of hours reading, but no great shakes. Soooooooooo slow to get going that I almost gave up. Read more

found that this book really didnt get going until the last few chapters when something actually happens. good when you get to it, but by the time you do, the book is nearly over.

Frothy But Fun
I know I liked this book as I finished it in one day whilst travelling long distance on a variety of trains. So that must say something about its appeal. Read more

Wish you were here
This is the first Mike Gayle book I have read and I thought it was terrible!! Shallow, boring and dull! Charlie seems a very boring person, and there weren't many (any?) laughs. Read more
