4.0 out of 5 stars quietly appealing, 2 Feb 2005
By J. B. Bowley "Jo" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is about an American girl in her early twenties who feels that her life is going nowhere. Everyday she goes to work, sees the same people, and comes home, with nothing much happening inbetween.

Then, she gets the opportunity to go to London, accompanying the office Don Juan on a business trip, and jumps at the chance. Once in London, she loves it and, deciding that she does not want to leave, sets about staying as long as she can.

This is a lovely book about taking chances and not letting life pass you by. It is also really interesting reading about the British and London through the eyes of an American Anglophile. I really enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A London love letter, 10 Jul 2006
By M "M" (California USA) - See all my reviews
As a huge fan of both Ms. Goldsmith and the city of London (I spent one of the best weeks of my life alone there) I loved this book and consider it her best in years.

I liked the heroine who was an ordinary person with ordinary flaws and problems and I liked the fairy tale aspect of the story when the heroine dared to do the extraordinary and step out of her old life and into something new.

There was a good mixture of characters in the book, none of them perfect and most of them likeable and almost all of them relatable. Who hasn't had the shallow office friend or the real life fairy godmother who helped us when we needed it? Some of us have had the distant parent and yes more than a few of us have dated or fallen for the wrong man.

This book did a great job of allowing you to live vicariously through the life of the main character while also (hopefully) getting you to ask questions about your own life and the choices you've made.

It saddened me to read a story in which Ms. Goldsmith celebrated the idea of inner beauty and making the most of ones gifts and talents only to have to face all over again the fact that the world has lost a good author and person because she was so unhappy with her own appearance.

And there again how many of us reach for things like cosmetic surgery (or think about it) because we're unhappy with our own appearance and how many of us are guilty of judging other people based on appearance alone?

Read the book and think about that while enjoying the sense of adventure and discovery and then pass it on to a friend so that you can talk about it over a cup of tea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goldsmith is a star!, 19 Jul 2004
This review is from: Wish Upon a Star (Paperback)
I have just finished reading Olivia Goldsmith's last ever book and I am deeply sad. Olivia died shortly after completing Wish Upon A Star. The book was a modern day fairy tale based in New York and London and about a woman called Claire who tries to build a new life for herself in a different city.
The book sometimes made me laugh out loud, other times it made me cry. The meaning of the book is espically sad when you realise it is the last book ever to be written by such a tallented writter. I shall miss her books very much.
