Product Description

From the bestselling author of THE FIRST WIVES CLUB comes a sparkling romantic comedy. Perfect for fans of Candace Bushnell.

For Claire, a secretary from Staten Island who takes the ferry each morning into Manhattan, it’s spent working 9 to 5 at a law firm, reading romantic novels, desperately wishing that her life could be as full of excitement as the heroines featured. That is until she is offered her the chance of a trip to London – all expenses paid.

When Claire sets foot on British soil she falls head over heels in love – with a country. Life in NYC is forgotten as she rents a room and sets out to make a whole new life as an American in London. But she reckons without the obstructive efforts of a very strait laced Englishman…

4.0 out of 5 stars quietly appealing 2 Feb 2005
Format:Paperback
This book is about an American girl in her early twenties who feels that her life is going nowhere. Everyday she goes to work, sees the same people, and comes home, with nothing much happening inbetween.
Then, she gets the opportunity to go to London, accompanying the office Don Juan on a business trip, and jumps at the chance. Once in London, she loves it and, deciding that she does not want to leave, sets about staying as long as she can.
This is a lovely book about taking chances and not letting life pass you by. It is also really interesting reading about the British and London through the eyes of an American Anglophile. I really enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A London love letter 10 July 2006
By M
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a huge fan of both Ms. Goldsmith and the city of London (I spent one of the best weeks of my life alone there) I loved this book and consider it her best in years.

I liked the heroine who was an ordinary person with ordinary flaws and problems and I liked the fairy tale aspect of the story when the heroine dared to do the extraordinary and step out of her old life and into something new.

There was a good mixture of characters in the book, none of them perfect and most of them likeable and almost all of them relatable. Who hasn't had the shallow office friend or the real life fairy godmother who helped us when we needed it? Some of us have had the distant parent and yes more than a few of us have dated or fallen for the wrong man.

This book did a great job of allowing you to live vicariously through the life of the main character while also (hopefully) getting you to ask questions about your own life and the choices you've made.

It saddened me to read a story in which Ms. Goldsmith celebrated the idea of inner beauty and making the most of ones gifts and talents only to have to face all over again the fact that the world has lost a good author and person because she was so unhappy with her own appearance.

And there again how many of us reach for things like cosmetic surgery (or think about it) because we're unhappy with our own appearance and how many of us are guilty of judging other people based on appearance alone?

Read the book and think about that while enjoying the sense of adventure and discovery and then pass it on to a friend so that you can talk about it over a cup of tea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goldsmith is a star! 19 July 2004
Format:Paperback
I have just finished reading Olivia Goldsmith's last ever book and I am deeply sad. Olivia died shortly after completing Wish Upon A Star. The book was a modern day fairy tale based in New York and London and about a woman called Claire who tries to build a new life for herself in a different city.
The book sometimes made me laugh out loud, other times it made me cry. The meaning of the book is espically sad when you realise it is the last book ever to be written by such a tallented writter. I shall miss her books very much.

3.0 out of 5 stars not that bad! 6 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I do understand how the other reviewer found this book slightly dull, but i must admit although it can be slow at times its not a bad read. Its a story about a young american lady whom has no real social life nor happyness but fills her days thinking about Mr Wonderfull the office big shot/hunk, so when she gets an invite to go to london with him she jumps at the chance. The book takes you through her experiences in london and her really finding herself. You find yourself really rooting her along and dieing to know what happens to her and Mr wonderfull.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new favourite 10 May 2011
Format:Paperback
I think of Olivia Goldsmith as a writer of wrongs. My previous reads of hers are some of the angriest books I've ever read (and great with it). This one, however, is a completely different story.

Claire is a girl I can easily relate to. Stuck in a dead-end job in a location she hates, with no one she's really close to, she doesn't realise how unhappy she is until she gets a surprise opportunity to travel. Once in London, she falls in love with the city and quietly sets about building a completely new life for herself - the one she's secretly always wanted.

It's a fairy tale, but I didn't find it tired or cliche. It's not about magically getting everything you want by the wave of someone else's wand; it's about having the courage to create your wishes-come-true for yourself, even when it means changing everything you've ever known. It's a message I enjoyed immensely.

I also loved the tone of the book, and the pacing. It's a very quiet story. Claire is a quiet young woman, and the life she wants isn't filled with dazzle. It was an uplifting read, and just what I was looking for at a time when I want something gentle too. Certainly my new favourite Olivia Goldsmith book.

4.0 out of 5 stars delightful 24 Jun 2005
Format:Paperback
This is chicklit, but throughly delightful. An American girl in a boring job gets the chance to come to London, where she makes friends and builds a new life. Also, she should get commission from the London tourist office - it has given me the incentive to see a few of the places in London that she visited, but we residents rarely have time to explore. Makes London sound like a magical city! Great escapism.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem 29 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I'm not sure how I got my hands on this book, but I'm so very glad I did. It's one that I read over and over again whenever I'm down or want to escape into a whole other world.

This book has charm, and warmth and the most lovely chick lit protagonist I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

I would totally recommend it.
