A fun, feel good track, 17 Jul 2006
This is a simple fun "remember when....." track. I loved it. And so what if Sandi got specific times out of sync, it's just fun. I think if people don't like it, then don't listen to it and don't waste time with pedantic criticism. When I listened to it, it made me smile and really remember simpler times without longing for those times to return, just a sweet reminder. Well done Sandi, keep the feel good attitude.

One hit wonder espousing pointless utopia.., 9 Jun 2006
Apart from the fact Thom is being marketed as an "internet phenemeonon" with a dubious starving artist angle by Quite Great PR and her small indie label BMG, this is a very stupid song. Reminds me of whoever wrote the appalling 'If 60s were 90s'. Pining for an era that has long passed - am sure Douglas Coupland has a definition of this in his classic 'Generation X.' I guess nostalgia for something that is only ever imaginary is comfortable, and it's been the selling point of silly music like Oasis.
Sandi is confused though - 77 was the year of 'I Don't Want to Talk About It' (Rod Stewart), 'Star Wars', and 'Silver Lady.' Punk rock was probably over by then. 1976 was seen as the year of punk, likewise, revolution was in the air...in 1968. 'The only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail.' Odd that Scot-Thom calls it 'mail', that's very American - spose it's akin to the Mary Chain 'Sidewalking'? She must have been unaware of the telephone which was around in the 60s and 70s and the telegraph too. 'When accountants didn't have control...'- am sure they were around in the 60s and 70s - look at someone like Allen Klein or David Geffen! The bit that conflated 'God Save the Queen' (1977) with Procul Harum's 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' (1967) sounds cringeworthy and fails to tie up the 77/69 refrain.
Can it be pointed out that 1969 saw the Manson Family murders, the secret bombing of Cambodia, Altamont, the election of Nixon, FLQ terrorist bombings, the continuing occupation of Palestine by Israel, Soviet and Chinese military clashes, the expansion of Vietnam to Cambodia and Laos, Hamburger Hill, tensions rising in Northern Ireland, the Stonewall riots, the uncovering of My-Lai, the shooting of Black Panther members, & the war of attrition between Egypt and Israel. Sounds good, doesn't it? Likewise 1977, saw such punk-rock things as the election of Jimmy Carter and the rise of Thatcher against the backdrop of Labour discontent and striking! A lot of record shops sold tapes and 8-tracks, I do remember, though I kinda like the bit where she bleats about vinyl being top. Give me a remastered cd with sleevenotes and bonus tracks anytime however...
It's a bit odd for someone to moan about computers and the internet, the same time that her record company and PR-reps are using it (if you believe a starving artist can but that size bandwith and ghost market) in order to sell her as a net phenemenon like Artic Monkeys or Gnarls Barkley! Anyway, an artist up there with the Black Coffee-lady and Lisa Loeb: one, hit, wonder.

Truly awful , 4 Jun 2006
While there are plenty of shockingly bad singles around at the moment (Orson's Bright Idea,Nerina Pallot's Everybody's Gone To War) this song stands out on it's own.The title says it all really.
