5.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, Nostalgic little Ditty; Brilliant!, 18 Jul 2006
By Diego Sada Jr. (Monterrey, Mexico) - See all my reviews
I like this song. I guess I understand if people get tired of hearing it, but I sure don't! I first heard this song when the original, independent label single came out in late 2005. I thought it was brilliant then and I think it is brilliant now! So what if some of the dates may be a year off? Those are minor quibbles. I quite like the clever lyrics and the imagery they inspire (at last to me). I like the simple arrangement. I love the a cappella beginning and the drum accompaniment. Sandi Thom is a beautiful woman with an incredible voice. I was glad to hear this song was No.1 in the UK charts. I was only surprised it took so long. One-hit wonder? Hardly! I am sure we will continue to hear great music from Sandi. I have ordered her album and cannot wait to hear it. Good for you, Sandi!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Atrocious, irritating excuse for music, 28 Jun 2006
By D. S. Roberts "dewirobs" (Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sandi Thom making it to number one with this single was the singularly worst news I've heard all year. There are countless female solo singer/songwriters about who are much more deserving of mainstream success than her - Nerina Pallot, Rachael Yamagata, Shelly Poole to name a few - and yet she goes straight to number one with this aggravating and noisy debut single. The lyrics are so pretentious I want to bash my own head in with a rock every time I hear them. 'When music really mattered and when radio was king, when accountants didn't have control, and the media couldn't buy your soul, blah-de-blah'. She's just trying so hard to be a little non-conformist bohemian it makes my skin crawl. More importantly than lyrical stupidity, of course, is the fact that this song has the same musical quality gained from throwing an old cat in a blender. Her voice is nothing special, and the simple, repetitive drumming in the background is really rather grating.

I suppose she deserves credit for trying something that is musically a little different, but it's definitely not to my taste and as I've mentioned, she deserves a slap for those 'love-me, I'm so spiritual and old-skool' lyrics. A brief look at her album the other day only reinforced this hatred. 'When Horsepower Meant What it Said'? Oh, get over yourself, Sandi.

Fantastic album, I have also seen her live. The CD is recommended and quite country theme.
