Product Description

With a spirit of innocence and excitement, no audible breaks of register and perfect diction, Dawn Upshaw graces us with a satisfying crossover recording in which each song is a fully realised musical monologue. The eclectic and infrequently performed repertoire, from Bernstein, Blitzstein, Sondheim and Weill, compliments her charm and interpretative acuity. There's her humorous "Saga of Jenny", her adorable "That's Him", her poignant "Like It Was" and her freshly vibrant "I Feel Pretty". Conductor Eric Stern is divine in his arrangements and accompaniment. This is one of the best musical theatre albums available. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite records 11 April 2007
Format:Audio CD
I bought this when it was new and have never tired of it. A great voice wonderfully suited to the material, great songs passionately sung (where appropriate), great coloratura and sympathetic arrangements. Dawn Upshaw covers a very wide range of material on record from Vernon Duke to Anne Trulove in the Rake's Progress to very modern art songs. I think this is her best record.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good listen 26 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this because I heard one track on Radio 3, and wanted to hear more. I wasn't disappointed. It's an interesting selection of material, and Dawn Upshaw's voice suits these songs well. What's more, she's got good diction, so though the lyrics are supplied you don't need to read them - you can just sit back and enjoy listening to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dawn Chorus 9 April 2014
Format:Audio CD
This 1994 release, a crafted collection of cabaret songs, familiar and lesser known Broadway numbers, and Kurt Weill's American period, just about sealed the deal for me - Dawn Upshaw is my favourite interpreter of these genres, a voice I had first come to love with her Knoxville 1915 and Gorecki triumphs of the late 1980s. Dawn just nails the light and shade, the emotion and storytelling on each and every number, and resists the temptation to add the coloratura with which many opera stars spoil a good song. Her Weill interpretations, of My Ship, from the Weill/Ira Gershwin "Lady in the Dark" and Stay Well, from "Lost in the Stars" are just edged out by the wistfully magical "I Wish it So", from Blitzstein's "Juno". Sumptuous
