Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Debbie Wiseman's score to the film Wilde was extremely well received. Extra proof of its success is given by this concept album, which reunites her with the film's stars Stephen Fry and Vanessa Redgrave. They respectively narrate "The Nightingale and the Rose" and "The Selfish Giant", two of Wilde's most charming short stories. That narration sits between and above the tale told in music. Both are highly lyrical and humorous pieces which delight in taking instructive cues from the text itself, which reads like musical prose. For instance, when the giant appears, huge orchestral footsteps are trod. It also gives voice to the nightingale's final and achingly beautiful song. Throughout the pieces, a generous spotlighting gift is given to youthful up-and-coming instrumental soloists for violin, cello, flute and piano. Their contributions can be appreciated all the more in two bridging suites entitled "My Own Garden" and "One Last Song". This is a work that will appeal to a child of any age. --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars Wilde about Wiseman!, 14 Nov 2000

This review is from: Wiseman: Oscar Wilde Fairy Tales (Audio CD)
Debbie Wiseman produced one of the loveliest film scores of the last few years with her music for the film "Wilde" (starring Stephen Fry), so it only seems natural that she should turn to these, two of Oscar Wilde's most poignant and affecting fairy tales. Her music is sensitively scored, featuring delicate musical word-painting, performed by some first-rate soloists and the ASMF under Marriner. Fry narrates "The Nightingale & the Rose", a terribly sad tale enhanced by Wiseman's feel for beautiful melody (listen to the soaring flute theme for the Nightingale); while Vanessa Redgrave tackles "The Selfish Giant". But Wiseman is the star of the disc and it is her lovely music that makes this an album to cherish. Quite gorgeous, unashamedly melodious classical music.
