Blistering true life account of life within a mafia family. The film was superb, the book is even better. At time you actually feel like you are part of the family yourself. Marvellous!

Goodfellas is a great film, a classic. For a book to produce such an amazing film, the book's got to be something special in the first place. If you don't believe those people who claim that the book is better than the film read this and you'll soon join their line of thought. Pileggi is on a par with supreme author Mario Puzo - exemplified by his ability to mercutiously create each situation for the reader. It's such an easy read you'll be glued to it until you finish the final page. A true great, up there with the likes of other Mafioso classics such as The Godfather.

Pileggi materfully interdisperses the quotes from the book's main protagonist, Henry Hill, and his wife, with thoughtful and dispassionate analysis. While this book largely reflects mob life during the 1970s in New York, it's bredth and pragmatism have elevated it to timeless classic. There's little here to fault. The central narrative of Hill's life is expertly interwoven with a variety of scams, gangsters and mafia politics, and the result is a serious, unglamorised portrayal of a life rarely separated from crude stereotypes and generalisations of the popular media. Wiseguy is the best of the genre by a significant distance, and it's only real competition is the book 'Casino' also by Pileggi. If organised crime is something that interests you, this book is a must. If it's not, you should read it anyway for the skilled workmanship of suburb author.

OK... you have seen the film, but once you read the book...
the film goes from good to GREAT...
So much more is in the book, but, that does not detract from
the movie... read the book, and watch the movie...

This book is a must, it's so incredibly well written and witty it's unbelievable. My boyfriend read it as well and it is now his favourite book. Not sure if 5 stars is enough for that one
