"Penny Armstrong is a symbol of the revival of midwifery." -Michael Odent, obstetrician and author"

Product Description

What is the ideal way to give birth to your baby? Is it a high-tech delivery, with drugs, and monitors, and surgery? Or is it more naturally, with a midwife and/or birth center? Is it possible today to combine the best of twentieth-century medicine with the human advantages of a natural childbirth? Penny Armstrong and Sheryl Feldman, authors of the acclaimed A Midwife's Story , explore the issues that influence the way women give birth: technology, psychology, culture, medications, history, and women's relationships with their mothers. They demonstrate, in a warm and convincing fashion, that most hospitals aren't designed to bring out the wisdom of the body at birth. And they reveal how to find a setting that will help make your child's birth a healthy and powerful experience. Informative, provocative, and based on the latest medical research as well as on Penny Armstrong's years of experience as a certified nurse-midwife, A Wise Birth is essential reading for mothers, fathers, and health-care professionals.

'This thoughtful and well-written book should be read by any and all prospective parents.' Publishers Weekly
'Eloquent...An inspiring and freshly stated vision of a central experience in women's lives.' Kirkus Reviews
'Infinitely subtle and a pleasure to read.' The Dallas Morning News
'Exquisite... A Wise Birth speaks eloquently about the uncompromising power of birth.' Mothering

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read 6 Feb 2007
Format:Paperback
I love this book so much. I want everyone who has anything to do with birth to read it. Penny and Sheryl talk so much sense. They answer so many of the questions which are running around my head when I return from another dispiriting shift on labour ward. It reminds me of why I wanted to be a midwife and why it is important to help women be empowered by their birth experience so that motherhood becomes a positive experience. It reminds me to reflect on my practice; reminds me that blaming women is unacceptable, and that we need to keep up the fight for more time and fight the medicalisation of birth.

Format:Paperback
An engaging affecting book, its plain-speaking authority comes from the heart and draws on years of experience. I wish I had read it before my children were born. Recommended.

They gave up epidurals, which depressed the pushing reflex. They didn’t break the bag of waters, which protected the baby’s head and helped expand the opening of the uterus. They didn’t cut the cord right after birth: Its last pulses brought added rich stores to the baby and, at the same time, helped to shrink the placenta so it could peel more easily from the uterine wall. "e;

While security, warmth, quiet, and darkness encourage the flow of endorphins, fear and its relative, stress, can inhibit them. Like a laboring animal in a cave, Odent said in another lecture, the female seeks a protected environment in which to give birth, so that she and her young will be in darkness and warmth, safe from predators. If she is undisturbed, she delivers; if, however, a predator approaches, her adrenaline rises. It halts her labor so that she can fight or take flight. "e;

a woman can leave off neocortical consciousness – thinking, analyzing, monitoring her environment, modifying her behavior for social purposes, or making decisions. If her birth environment is free from intellectual demands and control requirements, "e;
