Product Description

Product Description

Accumulations of life stresses—physical injuries, emotional and psychological stresses, birth traumas, and toxicity—can become imprinted in the tissues, acting like a videotape that is replayed whenever stimulated. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy aims to resolve the trapped forces that underlie and drive these trauma-based patterns of disease and suffering in body and mind. Wisdom in the Body teaches practitioners to develop the finely tuned skills of hands-on palpation and perception to sense the body’s subtle rhythms and patterns of inertia or congestion, with the goal of ending trauma and facilitating the expression of the breath of life. A comprehensive introduction to this practice, the book draws on the insights of pioneers like Drs. W. G. Sutherland and Franklyn Sills to explain the key principles about the body’s natural intention to heal and how this capability can be encouraged. A valuable resource for students, practitioners, and the lay reader, the book also includes a foreword by Dr. Franklyn Sills.

From the Back Cover

Craniosacral Therapy, a ‘hands on’ therapy that has emerged from the osteopathic tradition of medicine, is a treatment using palpatation and subtle manipulative techniques to encourage the body to rebalance and heal itself.

It is based on the theory that every cell in a healthy body expresses a rhythmic movement which is fundamental to life – and which has been called craniosacral movement. At the core of the body the cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord, expresses this motion in a tide-like ebb and flow; while bones, organs and other structures in the body each follow their own particular pattern of movement. This motion is so subtle that it is barely measurable with instruments, but the hands of a trained therapist are able to perceive it.

In response to physical knocks or emotional stress, the body’s tissues contract. Any stresses, tensions or traumas which have been ‘stored’ in the body in this way will restrict the body’s functioning – and these show up in the way the craniosacral motion is expressed. Craniosacral therapists are trained to feel this subtle motion in the body, and can use it to identify areas where there is congestion or restriction. In this way they can identify the possible origin of a problem. Using the hands to reflect back to the body the pattern it is holding, the therapist provides an opportunity for the body to let go of its restrictive pattern and return to an easier mode of functioning.

Format:Paperback
I have to say i do not usually get around to reviewing books but this book is so good i had to let people know. I have studied CranioSacral therapy with the Upledger Institute and have read Upledgers books CranioSacral therapy and beyond the dura and found them very informative but also quite heavy going. Michael Kerns book is a fantastic read full of great info on The subject of CranioSacral therapy it is very informative whilst also being easy to read it is a great book to read together with Upledgers, highly recomended.

Am at the beginning as I find Craniosacral work really encompassing yet amazing at the same time. Reading snippets and finding that do-able.

Well written and really not as dry as some Cranial books out there. Recommended.

Book Review
Wisdom in the body. The Craniosacral approach to Essential Health. Michael Kern

I love this book. It is my all time favorite cranial text book. It is a strait forward introduction to Cranio-sacral work. It reads well, the concepts are in a logical way laid out and discussed. Kern is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. He has a unique gift in translating complex subject matters into easily understandable and digestible language. The illustrations are very clear. You get a sense of the scientific benefits of this form of therapy AND the beauty of it. If there ever was a cranial book that you could read beneficially before bed time, this is it. I recommend this book to all professionals who want to know more about this modality. It will help you decide if you want to study cranial work. It will also give you clear guidance to which of your clients would benefit from this form of therapy. Ursula Popp

Amazing book 28 Sep 2007

I couldn't have put it better than the last reviewer. This is by far, my favorite book that I've read on the subject of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. Kern has an amazing ability to put things into laymans terms, and because of that, this book is an incredible joy to read. Franklyn Sills, while a brilliant mind, doesn't really know how to break it down into terms a common person can understand. Upledger, who is clinically and medically gifted, also tends to overcomplicate the subject of cranialsacral work in his writings. Pick this book up, it's a must as a starting point.

Clear, Accurate for practitioners or receivers 27 Oct 2009

I'm an LMP taking a Craniosacral Therapy certtifcation and this books is an item on our assigned reading list. I'm only halfway through the book and I'm already very impressed with it's clarity in explaining the technique. It explains Craniosacral simply enough for non-bodyworkers to understand without dumbing it down. I highly recommend this book for an introduction into Craniosacral for both potential practitioners as well as potential clients who want to understand the technique.
