Product Description
You’ve probably heard the expression, “It’s time to cut the cord.” Well, it may be time to “cut the cables” at your office and free yourself from your desk and computer. Wireless networks are the waves of the future—literally. Wireless Networks For Dummies guides you from design through implementation to ongoing protection of your system and your information so you can:
  • Remain connected to the office in airports and hotels
  • Access the Internet and other network resources in the lunchroom, conference room, or anywhere there’s an access point
  • Use your PDA or laptop to query your database from the warehouse or the boardroom
  • Check e–mail wirelessly when you’re on the road
  • Get rid of the cable clutter in your office

Wireless Networks For Dummies was coauthored by Barry D. Lewis, CISSP, and Peter T. Davis, who also coauthored Computer Security For Dummies. Barry Lewis is president of an information security consulting firm and an internationally known leader of security seminars. Peter Davis is founder of a firm specializing in the security, audit, and control of information. Together, they cut through the cables, clutter, and confusion and help you:

  • Get off to a quick start and get mobile with IrDA (Infrared Data Association) and Bluetooth
  • Perform a site survey and select the right standard, mode, access point, channel and antenna
  • Check online to verify degree of interoperability of devices from various vendors
  • Install clients and set up roaming
  • Combat security threats such as war driving, jamming, hijacking, and man–in–the–middle attacks
  • Implement security and controls such as MAC (Media Access Control) and protocol filtering, WEP (Wireless Equivalent Privacy), WPA, (Wi–Fi Protected Access), EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol), and VPN (Virtual Private Network)
  • Set up multiple access points to form a larger wireless network

Complete with suggestions of places to get connected, Web sites where you can get more information, tools you can use to monitor and improve security, and more, Wireless Networks For Dummies helps you pull the plug and go wireless!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wireless Networks for Dummies, succinct connective concepts., 6 Nov 2004
By A. Brown (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although it says Dummies on the cover, Wireless Networks for Dummies is no guide for idiots! Instead, this is a comprehensive users guide on wireless networking; its applications, practicalities, strategies and advantages.
As you will already have read in Amazon's description, this book has a wide range of topic headings, all of which are pertinent to anyone needing to understand the concepts behind wireless networking.

It would be fair to mention first of what this book is not. By 'wireless networking', this book is mainly concerned with internet protocol over the 802.11# wi-fi standard. Parts mention Bluetooth and IRDA but, if you're looking for a specific book on these, look elsewhere. Furthermore, there are no reviews on specific hardware. This is very much a book that deals in connective concepts.

The authors are internet security consultants and it is wireless security where the books' focus is at. Sections are dedicated to understanding the risks of wireless networking, the best practices for building a secure wireless network, the pros-and-cons of wireless encryption standards, taking counter measures against intruders, the issues of Virtual Private Networking with wireless access and, basic network troubleshooting. All of these are explained in a clear and concise way.

Also, this book outlines some of the software tools used in wireless network assessment plus, details of the tools often used to attack-n-crack networks. For the technically minded, the appendices cover some radio frequency fundamentals applicable to wireless networking, including ways of calculating signal strength and range.

My only gripe is with the Dummies house style. The one or two sentences per page that are meant to be conversational or funny are just distracting in a book of this depth.

I would recommend Wireless Networks for Dummies to anyone who has a reason to be interested in wireless networking. If you're an IT guy (or grrrl), a computing student in higher education, a SOHO user, a corporate network strategist, or even a wannabe war-chalker, this sound yet inexpensive text is certainly worth adding to the book pile by the PC :-)

Andrew J. Brown
