Amazon.co.uk Review

As existing carriers hire additional engineers and new telecommunications companies get underway, there's ever-increasing demand for people who know about Intelligent Network (IN) operations. Wireless Intelligent Networking explains how the IN works (especially in the United States), particularly the network's means of interacting with mobile communications systems. The book was written by working telecoms engineers, and though it is carefully organised (it's usually pretty easy to find a section on the protocol or other mechanism that interests you, for example), it's a little hard to decode on the first pass because of the nature of the subject. Advice to the reader: have specifications documents (relevant ones are listed in the endnotes) on hand as you read so that you can compare two presentations of the same facts and thus understand more quickly.

Discussion on the protocols that come into play during mobile interaction with the IN includes a fantastic level of detail. To cite one example, the different approaches to Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) taken by IS-764 and IS-771 are explored, and each specification is further explained via a chart that details the flow of messages between parties. Similarly excellent documentation appears for all applicable protocols, established and emerging. The business issues associated with wireless IN are also discussed. The material is good, but for a book-length treatment of emerging telecoms technologies and the industry surrounding them, read Telecommunications Convergence. --David Wall

Topics covered:

  • The established and emerging technologies surrounding wireless intelligent networking
  • Radio standards
  • Wireless network standards
  • Third-generation wireless standards
  • General-purpose SS7 signalling protocol
  • Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN)
  • Customised Applications for Mobile Enhanced Logic (CAMEL)
  • Market issues

Product Description

Here's an outstanding introduction to intelligent network (IN) concepts, technology, and applications for use in mobile communications networks. It helps assure your success in bringing new services to market by clearly explaining the technology, relevant standards, marketability concerns, product development issues, and even evolutionary trends.

This book is extremely useful in helping service developers understand the real-world issues involved with bringing new services to market, and equally valuable in educating ex-wireline professionals and non-technical executives on IN mobile networking issues and technology.

If you're new to the business, you'll appreciate the discussions of wireless IN standards, recommended business strategies, and applications. More experienced readers will learn more about the technology behind roaming, and the convergence of wireless and Internet communications.

Distinguishing this book from others in the field, and of particular value to more advanced readers, is the coverage of SS7, INAP, GSM, CAMEL, ANSI-41/WIN, ISUP loopback signaling, and proprietary IN technologies.

All readers will find the book a superb reference with clear descriptions, helpful diagrams, and an extensive glossary covering everything from basic mobile concepts to a detailed overview of the IN Conceptual Model.

This is one of the very well written books on Application of Intelligent Networking (IN) in wireless systems. Starting from introduction of SS7 systems, it highlights the limitations with these systems and how they were overcome. It explains about WIN (IN standard for ANSI 41) and CAMEL (IN standard for GSM) and the implementation and operational issues related to them.

There are couple of chapters devoted to business aspects of Intelligent Networking. What kinds of services do end users require and how IN can help in those areas. Is there a demand for these Value Added services? Is the market ready for them? Many other similar kind of issues are covered in these chapters.

Finally couple of chapters explain about the advanced IN services and how the network capabilities improve because of these IN services.

Equal amount of space has been given to the American standards (ANSI 41) and European standards (GSM). Though i must say that there is much more in-depth coverage for the American standards. 3G wasn't ready when this book was written, but still it does give very good idea about how IN would work in 3G systems. There is though a small section about 3G/WCDMA.

This book is very valuable for anyone wishing to learn about Intelligent Network (IN) operations whether they are technical minded or business minded.

A "dot.safe" investment 26 Mar 2001
By Alexandre Fernandes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Wireless Intelligent Networking is an excellent publication with rare characteristics: easy to read, well organized and extremely efficient in what concerns quantity and quality of information. Technical protocols, market trends, services deployment, integration, among other IN hot issues are thoroughly dissected in WIN. This is definitely an essential tool for anyone in the Telco business, saving time and money in training for beginners and helping experts on a daily basis. A "dot.safe" investment for any company in the industry!

An excellent multi-disciplinary text 1 July 2001
By Daniel Ginensky - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The book succeeds in presenting an inherently complex and multi-disciplinary subject in a clear manner with sufficient references to allow further study as needed.

The book provides a broad view of wireless networking, including financial, market, and technical views. The technical information is well organized and presented from more than one perspective. Rather than presenting volumes of minute details, architectural principals are introduced and illuminated.

This is one of the outstanding technical books that I have ever read. I would highly recommend it to experienced hands in the fields of wireless or wireline voice networks.

I would also recommend it to beginners with the following cavaet: this book plumbs some fairly deep waters, and does not delve too deeply into the related fields that are the building blocks of Wireless Intellegent Networking. SS7, AIN, PSTN architecture, and mobility management are all presented, but having some previous background (or somebody handy who can fill in details) would be a big help.
