Linksys by Cisco WRT54G3G Wireless G Router for 3G/UMTS Broadband

Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Linksys Wireless-G Router for 3G/UMTS Broadband is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a 3G/UMTS or GPRS Internet connection (requires Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/UMTS data card, available separately). You can also use a standard Ethernet attached Internet connection, like a cable or DSL modem, if available.Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing document files, a printer, storage space, and other resources. To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Router for 3G/UMTS Broadband can encode all wireless LAN transmissions with WEP or industrial-strength WPA Personal encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. With the Wireless-G Router for 3G/UMTS Broadband, you can create a secure wireless network with Internet connectivity, anywhere that 3G/UMTS or GPRS service is available.

1.0 out of 5 stars DOes not work with latest Vodafone data card, 7 Aug 2006
This item is advertised as working with Vodafone's data cards. In fact, Linksys have teamed up with Vodafone with this product and Vodafone's logo is all over the instruction leaflet and installation screens.

Whilst I am sure that this router did work with Vodafone at one point or other, it does not work with the Hauwei E620 card.

Unfortunately, the Hauwei E620 is Vodafone's latest card of choice, so this router does not work with Vodafone at all.

I have no choice but to return this item, which is a great shame.

1.0 out of 5 stars Be careful - you may achieve no more than a wasted day, 6 Mar 2008
This might well be an excellent piece of hardware, I wouldn't know. I mean to say, I ordered, paid for, and received one; as one would expect with Amazon, my order arrived swiftly. I also have Vodafone 3G internet access, which I've had since early September '07. You might think, therefore, as I did, that this was the piece of hardware for me.
You'd be wrong, as was I.
Despite this being marketed as a dedicated Vodafone 3G compatible router (and having the Vodafone logo on its packaging and casing) it does not work with the standard 3G card that authorised Vodafone distributors have been shipping in the UK for more than six months. Moreover, it took Linksys 30 hours from my first telephone enquiry to confirm that the router would not work with my card (the now standard Vodafone-distributed Huawei E870). Indeed, I was told by their support operative that they have no plans to distribute a firmware update for this card in the future: i.e. they are not working an an update at this time (early March '08) and there is nothing to indicate, as of now, that they are going to work on such an update. Note: if they begin working on an update in the next month it is still likely to be a another 3 months at least before the frimware update is available to download.
This is simply unacceptable for something which is marketed as a Vodafone-dedicated 3G router.
As regards Amazon's role in this, I would say the following: Returning and receiving a refund could not have been easier. The package was collected, without further charge to me, by DHL on the Monday and I had been refunded the whole amount, including postage, by Wednesday. However, I do think that Amazon must have some inkling as to the problems with this router and therefore should have a clear instruction to prospective buyers to check the compatibility of their 3G card before they buy.
I feel like I wasted my time through no fault of my own.

1.0 out of 5 stars didn't work with option card either, 6 Jul 2007
By William Hooper - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Looking on the back of my card it's says "Option" on the back. This card was very popular a a year or two ago. Unfortunately the linksys router does not work with that card either and when I called tech support they said it only works with three brands and customers should call Vodaphone and get them to ship a compatible card. On doing that, Vodaphone said they could sell me one for £250. Rubbish product I would say and ugly as sin. What a pain now I have to return it.

It's a great little router that works really well - to get it going with the latest data cards you'll need the latest firmware from http://www.linksys.com/vodafone
