Product Description

For upper level undergraduate and graduate level Electrical, Telecommunications, and Computer Engineering courses that cover wireless network technology and its applications. The book is also essential as a reference by practicing telecommunication engineers involved in the design of cellular/PCS systems, as well as by telecommunication managers responsible for 3G systems, from the United States and Europe to developing countries.

The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the basic theory and fundamental technology behind wireless networks as well as the practical applications of that technology in real-world wireless networks.

From the Back Cover

3G networks: architecture, planning, migration, management, and optimization.

  • Network architectures, planning, management, and optimization
  • 3G air interfaces: UTRA/W-CDMA and cdma2000
  • 3G data services: UTRA/W-CDMA, cdma2000, GPRS, and EDGE
  • Evolutionary paths for 2G networks
  • WLL, WAP, and more

New 3G systems will trigger an explosion in wireless Internet and data applications by delivering far higher data rates than have ever been possible in wireless systems before. In Wireless Network Evolution: 2G to 3G, renowned wireless expert Vijay K. Garg covers key 3G standard and every technical issue associated with planning, management, and optimization of 3G systems. Garg reviews the fundamental principles underlying existing 2G systems, then offers specific, practical guidance on migration to 3G. Coverage includes:

  • 3G standards activities
  • 3G European and North American systems
  • 3G data services for UTRA/W-CDMA, cdma2000, GPRS, and EDGE networks
  • Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and 3G systems
  • Major 3G enhancements for WLL applications

A very good book. It explains 3G and related fields 27 Sep 2001
By Jaime Valdivia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It's a very good book, it presents 3g concepts as well as other wireless networks. It has some practical examples, which makes complex concepts more clear. For a deep explanation of CDMA concepts and mathematics, you would need another book, but with this one you can get a more practical approach to CDMA. After reading this book, you would have a very precise idea of what is next in telecommunicactions. I think is a good book, though, is highly recommendable to also get UMTS and CDMA2000 specification, they are available for free.

Not so much info on 2.5G technologies. 7 Feb 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
What would you expect from a book titled "2G to 3G" ? GPRS and EDGE right ? However this book pays little attention on these technologies and barely mention them in a few pages. I would expect more GPRS and EDGE from a 800 paged book. It is still good book to keep as a reference though, since it covers broad range of wireless technologies in some detail.

Covers IS-95 evolution to 3G systems in some detail 26 Nov 2001
By angyh@singnet.com.sg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Like the author's other books, this one's emphasis is on the radio access network. The evolution of 2G to 3G dealt with here is specifically that for CDMA-based systems, since one-third of the book is concerned with the IS-95 standard. The next third has condensed but useful descriptions of the WCDMA and cdma2000 standards, and the final one is a hodgepodge of WLL, WLAN, WAP, Bluetooth, and radio planning and management.

All in all, this book reads like a compilation of some of the author's previous ones, albeit with the inclusion of new material, and should be helpful for those who want everything in one volume instead of two or three. Definitely not entry level.
