"Wired For Sound", as suggested by the cleverly thought out cover, is a very energetic album - a live wire, was my first thought when I bought the CD. Although it is a mixture of rock, ballads and gospel, it does sustain its energy throughout because the clear-cut instrumental accompaniments and Cliff's crystalline vocals have a real edge to them. Responsible for the success of "Wired For Sound" was Alan Tarney, who penned Cliff's biggest global selling single, the immortal "We Don't Talk Anymore" and produced the superb "I'm No Hero" album. The title track lives up to its credentials as it's electric and electrifying. All the other rockers on the album like "Broken Doll" and "Cos I Love That Rock n Roll" retain the same edge and verve, with aching vocals and well-crafted hooks you can't ignore. It's an exhilerating album, one you have to dance to. "Young Love" is a standout track that is as powerful as a runaway train. The ballads showcase the perfect pitch, velvet texture and sheer romance of Cliff's voice. "Say You Don't Mind" is like layers of melting chocolate, extremely sensual; "Summer Rain" is spine-tingling richness and delicately haunting . The live recording of "Daddy's Home" remains one of his best ever recordings imo, because you just start to feel the Earth move the moment you hear the intro. A classic. There are two bonus tracks included on this collection. They are both stunning. "Shakin All Over" recorded live alongside "Daddy's Home" is arguably better than the original and shows how strong Cliff's voice actually is. "Hold On" the b-side to "Wired For Sound" is from the "I'm No Hero" sessions and has the same rich intensity as the vocals on that album. "Wired For Sound" is an essential classic Cliff album.

This album, as with the earlier I'm No Hero, was produced by the great Alan Tarney who also wrote a lot of the songs and played nearly every instrument, too! In Tarney, Cliff found somebody who could bring out the best in him vocally and this album is no exception. Again, this album is getting on for 20 years of age but it still sounds contemporary, in other words it has not dated at all. Ballads such as Say You Don't Mind, Summer Rain and the slightly Gospel tinged Better Than I Know Myself show Cliff at his romantic best and the rockier songs such as Young Love, Oh No, Don't Let Go and of course the popular title track, Wired For Sound, show that Cliff can rock with the best of them when he wants to! Cliff's career, under the guidance of Alan Tarney, went from strength to strength and this, really, is the album that firmly cemented the excellent working relationship that the two men had. (Alan Tarney was also responsible for Cliff's biggest selling album ever, Always Guarenteed). The great news is, of course, that Cliff's next album (due out later this year) is to be produced by Tarney. This will mark the first time that they have worked together on an album since 1989's Stronger but, until then, buy this CD if you want to know how a great British pop/rock album really sounds.
