Product Description

From Amazon.com

The same folks who turn cartwheels over this English art-punk ensemble's first three albums are left cold by material cut after the 1985 reunion. This second-phase best-of permits an objective reassessment--so done, we'll stick with Pink Flag and 154, thanks. --Jeff Bateman

CD Description

After group members pursued solo projects during the early 1980s, Wire returned to the fold with a more ear-friendly, synthesized sound, while still maintaining their signature strangeness. Even with some of its rougher musical edges smoothed down, Wire's music retains its air of menace. This collection surveys the band's albums in the mid- to late '80s, when they flirted with dance beats and flaunted a precision only hinted at in their earlier, more dissonant days.
The emergence of a more dance-friendly Wire is clearly shown in "Ambitious" and the mighty "Ahead", which marries a pronounced New Order feel with absurdist lyrics that nevertheless sound like pronouncements from on high in the context of this propulsive, monolithic track. "Eardrum Buzz" and "Kidney Bingos" are supremely lovely (if slightly odd) pop songs, while "Madman's Honey" and "Silk Skin Paws" with their lush, eerievocals, have a dark majesty. But even as the band gravitated toward a more commercial sound, songs like "Feed Me" show that the dark side was still intact, as does "A Serious of Snakes", which features the line: "I'd rather make furniture than go to Midnight Mass".

5.0 out of 5 stars As great as the On Returning-compilation..., 24 Jan 2004

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
This review is from: 1985-1990: The A List (Audio CD)
Jeff Bateman's reductive and oh, so clever assessment of this compilation does a disservice not only to the music on the cd, but to the very idea of Wire. He's probably the kind of guy who made faces when Wire did Chairs Missing after Pink Flag, and after Chairs Missing turned his nose up at 154. He ought to be subjected to Document&Eyewitness in a room for several decades. Wire have always moved on, and to want them to be a retro-impersonation of their Harvest-selves demonstrates a severe lacking in the notion of punk and Wire...

The A List is a great 16-track compilation , from their 1985 reformation (though various Wire members had played together in Dome, He Said, A/Z and on The The's Burning Blue Soul) which produced the Snakedrill e.p. and later, The Ideal Copy to 1990's Manscape, just before the improvisational Drill mini-lp and Gotobed's exit as Wire became Wir...The new Wire pushed onward, no point in looking back, & on Mute records, embraced modern technology. There are plenty of great leftfield pop songs here to rival early classics like I am the Fly, Dot Dash, Outdoor Miner, Three Girl Rhumba, The 15th & On Returning. Only a sophist would dismiss such joys as indie hit single Eardrum Buzz, Kidney Bingos, Finest Drops, Ahead, Silk Skin Paws & Feed Me. Like On Returning, this compilation makes you want to return the origins: Snakedrill, The Ideal Copy, A Bell is a Cup...Until It Is Struck, IBTABA & Manscape.

To be fair, IBTABA was one of those artistic directions in music based on improvisation like D&E (1980, Grey Area) & The Drill. Eardrum Buzz and In Vivo remain lovely singles from 1989. Pity Manscape is so scantly represented, as that was a leftfield companion to Depeche Mode's Violator and a reminder of how great Mute records was...

If 1970s Wire were the model for simulacra band Elastica, the 1980s version could be seen as a precursor of Radiohead in their experimental KidA/mnesiac era (ironic that a Manscape-track was called Morning Bell).Wire embraced modern technology and studio improvisation and made forward-thinking avant-garde music: their contribution seems overlooked...

Tracks like Ahead, Kidney Bingos and especially "A Serious of Snakes" are wonderful- the latter having wonderful guitar, several steps on from 1977's Strange (but not that alien to...). The A-List is a great primer in the joys of Wire model#2, though buying the original albums on Mute are probably a sounder purchase, as the CDs are filled with bonus tracks. An equivalent to the On Returning compilation of their early years on Harvest.
