It is interesting that the old 'Wiper's Times' trench newspaper and its predecessors and successors have seen so much reprinting over the years - whilst many other documents of the period have sunk without trace. What the 'Wiper's Times' has to keep it in the public eye is a degree of fame, and more than a smidgen of humor.

This hefty hard back version includes the foreword by veteran Henry Williamson, and a somewhat notelike introduction - which does set the context for what follows. Also, most critically, there are notes at the end to explain some of the characters and events which are now no longer the common knowledge that they would have been in 1914-1918. Nevertheless some background understanding of the trenches remains useful to get as much out of this book as it contains.

Recommended for First War enthusiasts; students of the period; and the general reader interested in quirky artefacts and newspapers in general.

This book gives a rare insight to what the Tommy was really thinking whilst in the hell of war. It displays the incredible release through humour that the men had to have to survive mentally in unbeleivable conditions. A very highly recommended read.

This is an excellent and very funny book. However be wary of who you buy from. I had an order accepted by a company in the USA called Nearfine for a second hand copy. Lo and behold a couple of days after the showing of Hislop's drama on TV they wrote today: "I am sorry to say that upon preparing your order for shipping we realized that the book that we have in stock does not match the title we have listed"

Coincidence? I find it hard to believe they are not profiteering!
