Product Description

Andrew Klavan, author of True Crime and Don't Say A Word

A powerful and assured debut. It kept me turning the pages and guessing all the way. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

The opening scene of this piece is enough to get you hooked until the end: a man with a knife in each hand standing over the moonlit naked body of a female, both drenched by a heavy rainfall. Although the scene looks self-explanatory, the killer appears to have no identity and neither is there any evidence to convict him of the crime. Cue the clich d lonesome investigator, Alex Rourke, who is called back to his hometown in order to help solve the case. However, as the murder mystery gradually unravels, Rourke finds himself increasingly the pawn rather than the player of a sinister game. Can our hero outwit the killer? Rickards' use of the pathetic fallacy and descriptive dark settings provide a brilliant staging to this dramatic debut novel. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Gripping Debut 19 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Just for once the front cover of a novel truly sets the scene for the plot that follows - dark, brooding, mysterious, qualities which enigmatically develop with the main character, antihero Alex Rourke. The portrayal of small-town America is perceptively painted and the gripping suspense chills right from the start. Be warned. Once you start reading this you won't be able to stop.

Excellent first book 26 Mar 2003
Format:Hardcover
Just finished reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The story is interesting and engaging and the characters well developed. One of the best crime novels I have read in recent times which keeps you reading, guessing and second guessing until the very end. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

unexpected pleasure 5 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
Like another reviewer I got this as part of a set and couldn't put it down.
Unlike many 'thriller' writers, you can't see quite where he is going with the story and you get the sense that his charcaters are just as suprised by plot developments as you are, a sign of a really good writer that he allows his charcters freedom.
Was very suprised to find out that he was British as would have said it wa by an American writer it was so authentic.
Atmospheric, claustrophobic with an uneasy, unsettling feel to the story and a flawed hero but not int he traditional sense, I now have all his books though this one is one of the best of the four.
Highly recommended if you like thrillers that won't let you go!

This was a very slow and moody read, a good story but not of enough interest to keep me hooked.
