Product Description

Product Description

Gary Paulsen was in his forties, an internationally famous children's writer. Then he was overtaken by his passion - a passion for Alaskan dog-racing and a passion for the wild, beautiful landscape of the Arctic. Winterdance is the story of this passion. It is a powerful, almost unbelievable adventure, told with humour, pathos, vitality and excitement. Beautiful, funny and laconic, it is a book about men and dogs and their souls. 'An unputdownable celebration of the human spirit' Sunday Express

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely fantastic, 12 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I could not put this book down, i actually picked it up my mistake and had no interest in dog racing, alaska or anything similar, but one night with nothing to read, I started it and I ended it up finishing it the same night because I just could not put it down. Gary's remarkable spirit and determination are well voiced within his writing, the book centres around a dog race in alaska, and his relationship with his animals (not always man's best friend judging from some of his accounts) are hilarious, sad and the writing is so good you can almost imagine yourself at the scene. What can I say, I want more please !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Winterdance, 18 April 2006

(REAL NAME)
I read this book after taking part in a week long dog sled to raise money for Battersea Dog and Cats home in the Arctic. Not only did it bring back some fantastic memories, but the book had me both laughing out loud and crying.
The images that Paulsen creates through his writing put you right there with him and the "challenges" he faced.
I have recommended this book to a number of people, who have all raved about it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, touching, amazing!, 24 Mar 2003
I loved this book! I deliberately sought out a book about dog sledding as I had just been on my first husky sledding trip, and I wanted to re-live my experiences. I was not disappointed! Paulsen's tale of being a novice dog sledder training for and then running the Alaskan Iditarod was in turns hilarious, touching, heartbreaking and amazing. He combines rich descriptions of the beautiful Alaskan wilderness with hilarious accounts of his ups and downs training a team of dogs. I am honestly surprised he survived to write this book, though I'm glad he did - I couldn't put it down. I laughed, I cried, and when I finished I wanted to start it all over again. Buy it for yourself, and then lend it to your friends. You won't be disappointed.
