Book Description

In a desperate move to resist the advances of the tyrant King John, beautiful young Lady Melyssan claims to be married to the king's worst enemy, Lord Jaufre de Macy, the legendary Dark Knight without Mercy. Seeking shelter at Jaufre's abandoned Castle Winterbourne, Melyssan is unprepared for the angry warrior who returns to expose her deception. Jaufre is a man as harsh and unforgiving as the Welsh borderland he rules, but Melyssan knew him from a time long ago when he was her champion, gentle and chivalrous. Melyssan must strive to find her way back into Jaufre's heart before they are both destroyed by the wrath of a vengeful king. Winterbourne is a classic historical romance by Susan Carroll, author of The Bride Finder and The Dark Queen series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story 10 Mar. 2002
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Lady Melyssan is shy young girl with a crippled foot, who unfortunately comes to the attention of King John, desparate to avoid his advances she lies, saying that she is the wife of his enemy,Lord Jaufre de Macy, the Dark Knight.
The kings men escort her to Winterbourne, the Dark Knights home.He is away, so she shelters there, planning to leave before he returns.
Word reaches Jaufre that he has accquired a wife.So when he arrives home before she can leave,he decides to make her pay.
This is a beautiful story of a young girls belief in honour and love and a knight whose belief in those qualities has been destroyed.
This is the first book by this author that I have read and I will be buying her other books. This one will stay on my shelf, to be read again and again

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent historical romance! 28 Jan. 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
1/28/99 I must agree with the reviewer from New Jersey. The historical detail in this novel was used as more than just a superficial backdrop, it had far reaching consequences on the charracters' lives, and made the novel a very interesting and exciting read.
The hero and heroine were also very unique in unexpected ways, especially in the manner that they became connected in the past. I have read romance novels, and this one stands out from many that are out there. Carroll's "The Bride Finder" is also excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story 3 Aug. 2000
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Susan bought the middle ages to life with his story. Melyssan and Jaufre were wonderful. I agree with the review that states a sequel about Jenny would be wonderful. There are so many possibilities to this story.
It is so diferent from THE BRIDE FINDER and THE NIGHT DRIFTER but that does not detract from it. This story is so like Arthur and the knights of the round table.
Well done Susan on another great read. I do hope you will consider writing a sequel to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great novel 5 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Enjoyed this book so much I couldn't put it down. It's definitely a book I could read again. Intriguing story line and versatile characters, for once a leading lady that is not the most beautiful and perfect woman in the land, as is common in many historical fiction, yet is a multi-facited woman who has mortal flaws but still manages to win the heart of the tall, dark and brooding handsome knight who again is an interesting character. I also agree with the other reviews before me, in that I would love to hear more about Jenny, possibly in a follow up novel. Any thoughts on this Ms Carroll?

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can find this book, READ IT! 28 Feb. 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
So seldom do we get an opportunity to read novels set in this era. I was overwhelmed by the fact that for the first time in a long time I was as captivated by the historical aspect of a novel as I was by it's characters. The era isn't just a backdrop for the lovers, it's a character in the book.
Read this book!
