4.0 out of 5 stars A Cynical Cash In, But What A Great Band! 8 May 2000
By A. K. Sheikh VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Compilation albums really do have a bad reputation: either there's a contractual obligation to fullfil and/or the band's been dropped. The latter is certainly what happened here. Phonogram's well documented dumping of AAE makes the liner notes sound hollow and facile. However, the words are true. All About Eve really were a great band. Listen to this and find out why...
Opening with "Our Summer", you get an idea of essential oils of AAE - wistful lyrics about the joys of love and youth, well arranged guitars, melodic bass playing and a solid drum track. The first, arguably best, album provides half of the album tracks here, which indicates where their best material can be found: Brilliant songs ("Flowers..."), delicate verses and great singalong chorusses ("...Clouds") and Big Rock Songs (TM) ("...Woman", "Every Angel"). But it's "Martha's Harbour" that really stands out here (as it did on their debut. It's a beautiful song, but proved to be a millstone around AAE's neck... "What Kind of Fool" is utterly forgettable compared to "Martha's Harbour".
The patchy second album provides three tracks here, "Road To Your Soul" (a great song that should've re-started their careers), "December" (the best track off the second album - the inferior single edit is on here) and "Scarlet" (a depressing re-tread of "Martha's Harbour"). The singles did badly as did the album.
Adding to the band's woes, Tim Bricheno left in 1990 for the Sisters of Mercy, leaving Marty Willson-Piper to fill the gap. Whilst the ensuing "Touched by Jesus" contained some great songs, the three included here are probably the weakest: "Farewell...

5.0 out of 5 stars ALL ABOUT... ALL ABOUT EVE 3 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album sums up the band and their history perfectly. You might feel a bit cheated if you already own their stunning debut album, as over half of the tracks on that album are here. But for the newcomer it is ideal. You can hear the bands progression and noticable audio differences with different band members. It has some amazing B-sides and rarities that will fuel the true fans' need for more.
At the price - worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE CD 21 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album is a panoramic compilation of AAE in their heady Goth heyday. Not a single weak track and you should buy a copy if only to listen to the inspiring Road To Your Soul.... a swirling, anthemic track building into a rocky crescendo. Despite my musical tastes mellowing and broadening as I have grown older, this cd still gets a regular play ... it is slightly timeless and the songs are lyrically strong and musically simple and not stuck in any particular era or period of inspiration. Treat yourself to a copy

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent service 28 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This item was purchased as a gift which unfortunately I found to be a repeat of an item the recipient already owned. I contacted the seller late on boxing day and by early the following day had received very friendly instructions to return the item and I would be given a refund. I think this excellent service. Many thanks

3.0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Coda 26 Jan 2005
By Progger - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
For those (like me) who have All About Eve's 1988 eponymous debut and their 1989 follow up "Scarlett And Other Stories," this collection initially holds little appeal since half of it is comprised of songs culled from those two albums. However, the 10 "new" tracks make an album-worthy statement all on their own. Two of the songs, "Drowning" and "Strangeway" rank among the band's best material. It makes a fitting coda to the talented ensemble's all-too brief career.
4.0 out of 5 stars pure nostalgia! 7 Sep 2005
By paula b - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
the last 6 tracks on their own form a mini-album!
the rest is true greatest hits collection - my only complaint being the edited version of "december", cutting short the soaring guitar solo! "drowning" - when i first heard this song, it caught my breath, i couldn't believe how good it was!
the alternative versions of "flowers in our hair" & "the dreamer" were a pleasant surprise.
"the mystery we are, languishing on the ocean floor" - (undiscovered treasures).
