Dark and dreamy,

This review is from: Winter Tales (Paperback)
Definitely a Christmas read this, and very clearly written after Brown found god. Main themes are the nativity and all the cycles of nature, inevitably ending in death... I'm making it sound more depressing than it is. It's full of his usual wonderful evocations of Orkney, the ancient, wind-blown, work-a-day magic of the place, and Brown's poetic phraseology is a joy. One of those writers who can stop you dead in your tracks with a word. I loved this book, but recommend something else if you're new to him: 'Beside the Ocean of Time' is a real gem.
