A beautifully sung disc...most atmospherically recorded --Edaward Greenfield, Gramophone Magazine

CD Description

An exciting major new commission from the pen of composer and TV star Howard Goodall, framed by famous, gentle, approachable music for winter and Christmas, sung by the heavenly boys' voices of Christ Church cathedral choir. Almost everyone knows at least one of Howard Goodall's many TV themes, from The Vicar of Dibley and Blackadder to Q.I. and Mr Bean, and his BAFTA-winning Channel 4 documentaries on music have been acclaimed throughout the English-speaking world. His stage musicals have also won him awards on both sides of the Atlantic and a week has not passed in 5 years without one of them being in production somewhere. Winter Lullabies, for solo harp and boys' voices, comprises six loosely-interwoven movements, and despite Thomas Campion's jovial toast to the delights of winter with which it begins, the texts mainly centre on the hardship and the challenges of winter, particularly for mothers and their infants. Winter Lullabies was commissioned by Christ Church Cathedral Choir, receives its world premiere with Catrin Finch on this CD, and it was conceived with the richly robust, rhythmically energetic voices of Stephen Darlington's boy choristers very much in mind.

Timeless appeal. 23 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
Purchased this three years ago, and can honestly say it has become my favourite winter/ Christmas cd. It's contemplative, not in-your-face festive, which probably explains its appeal. Some compositions are familiar, but all sound fresh. A gorgeous solo harp accompanies boy choristers' heavenly voices, and you can follow the poetry of the lyrics from the sleeve notes. Track 6, Goodall's own 'Lullaby of Winter', must surely melt the most cynical of modern hearts:

"Yet there in Palestine
In that desert chill
We are reminded of some truths that do not wane
That for each homeless girl like her there are two endings
One where we hold her hand the other where we don't
That for two helpless kids like him there are two stories
One where we heed the cry, another where we won't."

I cannot imagine any more relevant Christmas music for our secular times. Recommended!

ATMOSPHERIC CD 22 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
I ordered this cd just before Christmas,it arrived on a freezing cold and snowy morning an ideal morning for playing this cd and the only way to discribe it is it has a wonderful ambience,it is not a loud or dry recording but at times gives a sense of distance like it was recorded in a huge hall, ideal for winter and ideal for relaxing to.
