Product Description

Product Description

In the great floating city of Sanctaphrax, blizzards howl through the streets as the Edgeworld descends into an endless winter. Quint, the son of a sky pirate, has just begun his training at the Knights Academy - training that involves heading out over the Edge on tethers to develop his flying skills. But when Quint breaks the rules and head out to Open Sky on his own, he runs into the great sky leviathan known as a cloud-eater, and must use all his skill and ingenuity if catastrophe is not to strike the Edgeworld...

From the Inside Flap

As she dangled precariously over the edge she screamed, 'Save yourself, Quint!'
High above the Edge, on an immense floating rock anchored by a giant chain, the city of Sanctaphrax is home to the Edgeworld's academics. At its heart is the famed Knight's Academy where the brightest and the best come to study.
One of these students is Quint, the son of a sky pirate, struggling to survive a first year of rivalries and plots in a city that is slowly becoming gripped by the intense cold of a never-ending winter. Chilled to its core, the buoyant rock upon which Sanctaphrax is built begins to strain against its tether - to try and break free.
As snowstorms and ice blizzards howl through the turrets and towers of the great floating city, ancient feuds and long-standing hatreds threaten to tear Sanctaphrax apart. What can one young squire of the Knights' Academy do to avert disaster? On his own, nothing. But with the help of a band of loyal friends...
A dramatic and action-packed adventure, illustrated throughout with stunning detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Edge Triumph!, 23 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Kicking off a bit after the curse of the gloamgozer finished, Quint arrives at the knights academy ready to begin training. As usal, the book has a good sence of adventure, the realtionships between the characters seem to click together poroperly, and, as is becoming common is some of these later edge-books, the winter knights has a very blood-thirsty battle-scene, which respectivly has just the amount of blood-lust any child, teenager or adult wanting to read will want. There is more politics in this book, fresh plotters seek power in the floating city, the uproar of stormphrax-era sanctaphrax is powerful.

Not forgetting, ofcourse the major wonder of the riddles superb line drawings, as he perfects every scene and wonder of sanctaphra and the addition of the titanic cloud-eater!

For any fan of children's or just good fantasy get this book! Death to the Earth Scholar's! Praise Sky!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nwilmot, 3 Jan 2006
By A Customer
this book was good because it was filled with adventure and sus pense as Quint is in the knights academy and a winter is gripping sanctaphrax. vilnix pompolnius is playing tricks on other students and forging fake letters from Quint(really vilnix) to maris saying maris should give him money. Then Quint sets off over the edge to stop the long winter. the plot fits together perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, involving, scary, 7 Aug 2009
By Mr. M. Jones "Jonesmz" (Chester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first part of this book - when the young boy with no parents on hand goes off to a boarding school where he will learn amazing new skills - was a bit like Harry Potter, but it quickly developed the style of the Edge books. There were many creatures, factions and lots of characters - junior students, senior students, professors, servants and guards - that mix up the plot so you don't know what is going to happen next. The names were a problem - many were spelt randomly, with lots of x's , and I got a bit lost when two or three were in conversation, trying to remember which faction each represented. The battle scenes were brutal and uncompromising, and rightfully sad. Maris's plight is also quite depressing, but it all ends on a lovely and mysterious note following a good bout of exotic adventure and an intriguing epilogue.

It's more for adults than children with all the fancy words and it was a bit hard understanding what was going on in the story. Read more
