Product Description

Ritchie Blackmore is one of the very few great guitarists who display musical genius, individuality and integrity in equally large parts. Within his bands Deep Purple and Rainbow he frequently displayed his liking for medieval music, expertly combining medieval inflections with hard rock and thus developing a guitar style that is truly unique. In the mid-1990s, Blackmore took a musical step which seemed perfectly logical to his countless fans: he founded the "renaissance rock" band, Blackmore's Night, together with his partner, the vocalist Candice Night. This seven piece band, surely, is the ultimate expression of Ritchie's unique musical ability and his fascination for medieval music. Now, Candice Night and Ritchie Blackmore are turning another of their dreams into reality: they are releasing their first and long-awaited Christmas album. Candice and Ritchie have always loved the spirit of winter: with its memories of good friends and families sitting around the fireplace, and the spirit of the holidays, the world seems to be a more forgiving gentle one, and people join with those they love. It evokes festivities and bright candlelight, and music that was sung and performed for hundreds of years by minstrels of the Middle Ages - many of these songs still emerge today during the winter season. This is Candice and Ritchie's interpretation of many favourite carols, shared, performed and enjoyed for the past 400 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Christmas album...!!! 1 Dec 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I suppose that this review could be considered by some to be very biased as I'll admit that I have been I lifelong Ritchie Blackmore fan, loving everything he has done from Deep Purple, Rainbow to the beautiful, mature mature music of Blackmore's Night.

If you don't like Christmas records in general, then you will hate this!!!

However the Blackmore's Night sound is absolutely perfect for this CD. The renaissance sound, using traditional instruments and acoustic guitars give it an authentic warm sound and feeling that is perfect for the season.

Cuddle up in front of the fire with a drink, lights dimmed and enjoy both Candice's vocal and Ritchie's effortless guitar playing on traditional carols. Superb pieces include the instrumental 'Winter (Basse Dance)', while Candice's vocals have never been as heavenly as on 'Ma-O-Tzur' and 'Emmanuel'.

Other tracks bring out the fun, happy side of the band which has been apparent in all of their CD's and DVD's so far.

'Christmas Eve' is as good a Christmas record that has been recorded for many years, while 'Wish you were here' which is taken from the bands first album fits perfectly with the mood.

I love the CD sleeve design, but as I am such a fan I would have liked a little more on the inner sleeve notes, but this certainly does not distract from what is a wonderful Christmas Album.

Buy it !!!!! You won't be disappointed..............

5.0 out of 5 stars We Wish You A Merry Christmas ! 24 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
Blackmore's Night - Ritchie Blackmore & Candice Night - musical partners & husband & wife, here produce their versions of Christmas carols & some originals. They're in the Blackmore's Night folk/renaissance style that they've been playing since they first recorded in 1997. 'Winter Carols' is a very much better Christmas album to play at Christmas time, with it's medieval sounds and Blackmore's guitar playing. Candice sings very beautifully. There's 12 songs, 9 traditional, and 3 original including the truly great acoustic guitar instrumental 'Winter(Basse Dance). It also includes Blackmore's Night's 'Christmas Eve' hit single. It was a Top 30 Radio Chart Hit in the USA and Germany. 'Christmas Eve' is a brilliant song, a beautiful melody, catchy chorus, lyrics invoking 'peace and love to everyone', finishing with a children's choir and snow bells. A CHRISTMAS CLASSIC as good as any !
It's got a nice cover of snow covered houses - from an oil painting by Karsten Topelmann.
The other musicians on the CD are Sisters of the Moon - Lady Madeline & Lady Nancy. And Pat Regan, who also Produced the album. There's some photos in the fold-out insert & sleeve of Blackmore's Night - Ritchie & Candy, Santa Claus, a couple of pussycats, and snow ! Winter (Basse Dance)Christmas EveAriel (live)

5.0 out of 5 stars A white Christmas? Or deep purple? 9 Dec 2006
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Neither, actually, but the cover shows a German townscape covered in snow (obviously from the days before global warming) while Ritchie Blackmore, the main musician here (he plays guitar, mandola, nyckelharpa, hurdy gurdy and various percussion), made his name originally with heavy rockers Deep Purple. The music here is very different from Ritchie's earlier music with Deep Purple and (later) Rainbow. I think it is essentially a folk album, rooted in the medieval era while sounding contempory, yet I found it in the mainstream pop-rock section of my local store. I also learned that the album made the top 10 of the American Billboard new age chart. So classify it however you want, but this is Christmas music of the highest quality. Candice Night (a wonderful singer) provides all the lead vocals and some of the harmonies and also plays shawns, pennywhistle and recorder. Producer Pat Regan plays all the keyboards.

The song selection is very British, including as it does I saw three ships, Ding dong merrily on high, Good King Wenceslas and the folk song Lord of the dance (great to see that one, even if it's not actually a Christmas song as such - it can be interpreted as one), finally closing with We wish you a merry Christmas. More familiar to American ears will be We three kings, Emmanuel and the opening medley of Hark the herald angels sing and O come all ye faithful, joined together by a great instrumental bridge.

Ritchie wrote a couple of tracks - the instrumental Winter (basse dance) and the outstanding Christmas Eve, which was actually released as a single in 2005. The other two songs are covers but they're new to me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music to drink mulled wine to 21 Dec 2013
Format:Audio CD
I do love this album. It features an interesting mix of traditional carols and Christmas songs that have all been given that familiar Blackmore's Night treatment in their arrangement. So if you're a BN fan there really is nothing to dislike here. It's perfect to put on on a cold winter's night during the festive season with the lights down low, candles lit, the dog / cat curled up all snug in front of the fire and a large glass of mulled wine in your hand.

The only thing that puzzles me is the inclusion of "Wish You Were Here", a song off the very first BN album. For one thing it's a very sad and melancholy song (to the point of being borderline depressing), and as far as I can tell it has absolutely no connection whatsoever to Christmas. Unless of course you count the line "don't you know the snow is getting colder", but that seems to be a bit of a stretch really. I can't fathom its presence here at all, which is why I've docked a star in my rating.

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing change from typical Christmas music style
If you enjoy Blackmore's Night there is slightly less rock and pop than in other albums. Still a lovely medieval style.
