Product Description

This DVD features 3 documentaries about Winston Churchill, voted 'Man of the Century' and 'The Greatest Briton Ever'. The Path To Power: When Winston Churchill died in 1965 he was already a relic of a lost-age, but his funeral brought a city to a standstill, the first state funeral to a non-royal since the 19th century. This programme examines Winston's extraordinary successes and failures, his early career, a career that started long before his historic performance during WWII. The War Years: On the first day of WWII, the admiralty sent a message to all of the British Navy. It simply read "Winston is back". British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had made Churchill First Lord Of The Admiralty - a position that Churchill had held at the beginning of WWI. This Documentary delves into Churchill's war record during WWI and asks the question: "How did a man responsible for some of history's greatest military blunders become a hero of the British people and the only man who could lead them into war?" Victory And Defeat: This documentary begins at the end of WWII, the final chapter of Churchill's career when he admitted that he was lonely and did not relish the prospect of the humdrum of a peace-time politician. This documentary explores the final contradictory years, his ideas that were well ahead of his time, his struggle with ill health and his advanced years. Churchill will surely go down in history as the flawed genius, a man who was capable of both towering achievements and some of the rashest moments of folly in history.

Synopsis

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather one sided, 14 Jul 2007
This record of Churchill's achievement is rather carping and negative, chosing to focus mainly on the negative aspects of Churchill's career (admittedly there were many, we all know this). It grudgingly admits to the various successes but does not sound happy or convinced about them. There are too many one sided commentaries and no hint at as to Churchills humour, and very little on his grit, determination and strategic vision. Not really a 'fair hearing'. I wonder why the makers saw fit to produce this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and enlightening, 2 Jul 2009
This documentary does indeed paint churchill in a new light, showing aspects of the man that are perhaps not so well known. Indeed, Churchill was a great leader during the war years but the is much much more to his career and his personal life. Unfortunately, Winston Churchill did not garner much success before or after the war and this DVD serves to explore the other aspects of this man's character.

Although not necessary a favourable portayal of Churchill, and there is much to admire in the man, this DVD is worthwhile for anyone wishing to know all the facts.

There is an awful lot of information here, and I certainly found it actually very interesting!
