5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to visit old friends again 7 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book has definately been worth waiting for. Having followed the Chadwick family through the previous two books charting their childhood years and the early years of their marriages it has been great to find out more about them. Ms Willett has given her characters such depth and their lives such texture that you feel that you are reading about real people. The continuity is good, however this book could also be read as a story on it's own. Ms Willett has helpfully provided a family tree and an synopsis of other relevant characters.

This is the third in a trilogy of books by Marcia Willett entitled Looking Forward, Holding On, Winning Through, which I rank as an outstandingly good collection! Part-way through reading this third and final book I discovered that there were two previous volumes, which I immediately tracked down and ordered, as I was completely caught up in this family history. The books are entertaining and exciting and I greatly appreciated being transported into the delights of South Devon every time I read a chapter or two. I would describe the book as perfect holiday reading, particularly when holidaying at home, with no other location to detract from the intense experience of what is described. For generations The Keep, built overlooking the River Dart in Devon has been home to whichever members of the Chadwick family wish to live there. A number of the family have been in the armed services over the two world wars and some are at present serving with the Navy, so life is to a certain extent fragmented, but The Keep is the place of stability and beauty, set in glorious scenery, described through the changing seasons, and near to river and coast. Freddy, the grandmother of the family and Theo, her brother-in-law who is an ex-naval chaplain provide this stability, aided by her housekeeper Ellen and Fox, Freddy's husband's ex-gunlayer from the Battle of Jutland, who has become gardener/handyman at The Keep. Other members of the family live there or visit there over the period covered by the trilogy: 1945 to the 1990s and I found the reading pleasure enhanced by using the family tree provided to check on the relative ages of the many different characters, in order to fully appreciate their interactions over a long period of time. 5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, rich read - unsurpassed. 16 Nov 2006
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My admiration is beyond limits for the ability of Ms Willett to portray such rich characters as the Chadwicks in this most wonderful triology. Full of compassion, wit, down-to-earthness, and human emotions. These books are to be kept, and read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful depth of characterisation 15 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
I came across Marcia Willett's writings about a year ago and have since managed to track down about 10 of her books. Each one has been a wonderful read, but this one especially so. The emotional depth of her characters is what makes her novels stand out from the crowd. There are some heartrending twists in the storyline, but it's a heartwarming story, too. And as I once lived in the area in which the story takes place, overall this book was one of the most satisfying novels I have ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last of the Chadwick trilogy 10 May 2014
By Sue
Format:Paperback
Last in the Chadwick Family trilogy.

Beautifully written and emotive, with tragedy and delight clearly interwoven. Charming characters, all in all a lovely book.

On re-reading, I found I remembered some, half-remembered more, and had entirely forgotten other parts. Best to read after the first two in the series (Looking Forward and Holding On).
