This book/series had all the makings of new science fiction epic. The first few pages exposed us in detail to a futuristic earth and set the scene for what could have been a significant sci-fi opera.
Sadly it all went downhill from page twenty onwards. Elizabeth Moons writing style reflects the qualities of children's author. Characters are one dimensional, the science is ignored, and the story has only one level for the reader to follow. The premise of a 'gung-ho' granny chasing evil space 'jocks' during her aristocratic fox hunt, was not only absurd, but also had the depth of a bad Jean-Claude van Damme comedy.
If you are looking for real science fiction epics, or even just a good read, look elsewhere; perhaps try Peter Hamilton, a real author.
