If your child loves Winnie and doesn't love his/her greens then this is the book for you. Winnie loves vegetables especially pumpkin but finds it tricky getting them back from the local market on her broomstick - there's a great picture of the tiny market taders below covered in tomatoes. Winnie decides to grows her own with the help of her magic wand. But it isn't straight forward and she's blocked in the house by an enormous cabbage, has snails the size of wheelbarrows and an enormous pumpkin squashing her roof. The illustrations are zany and detailed, with characters from other books by Korky Paul if you're familiar with them. My children spotted The Cat that Scratched and The Duck with No Luck in the queue for free pumpkin (who are probably going to rush home and make pumpkin soup with the recipe
included at the back) and we smiled at the references to Cinderella.
This a great halloween story for the little ones without any fear of them being scared. It's also quite good to tie in to a "buy local, grow your own" theme - though Winnie does have a magic pumpkin helicopter at the end which is brilliant pictorially and I''m sure would be powered in a carbon-friendly way.
