'I dinna think it saw me'.'I saw yin wance', said Wee Grumphie. 'At least, I think it wis a Huffalamp'.'But mibbe it wisna'.'Sae did I', said Pooh, 'wunnerin whit like a Huffalamp wis'.'Ye dinna see then that aften', said Christopher Robin in an affhaund wey.'No noo', said Wee Grumphie.'No at this time o the year', said Pooh.First published in 1926, Winnie-the-Pooh is one of the classics of children's literature. Pooh Bear, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl and all the other creatures of the Forest need no introduction. The Pooh books have been translated into many languages all over the world, and now Winnie-the-Pooh gets his first outing in Scots.Following on the huge success of Itchy Coo's Scots translations of Roald Dahl's books, James Robertson's version of Winnie-the-Pooh, complete with the original Ernest Shepard illustrations, is a warm and charming rendition of this much-loved tale, which will delight both bairns and adults alike.

About the Author
James Robertson is the General Editor of Itchy Coo and a contributing author to many Itchy Coo books. He translated Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr Fox as The Sleekit Mr Tod in 2008. He also writes for adults and has published three novels, including the bestselling The Testament of Gideon Mack which featured on the Richard and Judy Book Club in 2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winnie the Pooh and Friends in scots, 12 Feb 2009
By C. Upfield "Brihdein" (Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've read this book in English and Latin and now it's been lovingly translated into Braid Scots. It's a wonderful whimsical addition to the Scots language, with great appeal to young and old. The translation is very clever - even the poems, which are an intrinsic part of the character of Pooh, still maintain their rhyme, rhythm and meaning. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it is worthy to stand on the bookshelf beside the more weighty translations of the New Testament and Psalms into Scots.

3.0 out of 5 stars guid eneuch, 2 Jun 2009
It can't have taken very long to knock this one out. A few footnotes, along the lines of the Annotated Alice, would have been a welcome addition, as would have been some indication of who James Robertson might be. There isn't really such a thing as a generic Scots language, as it varies so much depending on the region - as in say, 'bairns' in Edinburgh and 'weans' in Glasgow. And why on earth has Piglet been renamed Wee Grumphie? Could it be political correctness - fear of the supposed offence to those fatwa-issuing armies of Scottish Muslims? From his name, Alan Alexander Milne must be assumed to have been of Scottish parents, even if he was unfortunately born in exile in Kilburn, London. I wonder what he would have thought? Or what Dorothy Parker, writing in the New Yorker as Constant Reader, might have thought - bearing in mind her review in 1928 of the House at Pooh Corner: "Tonstant Weader fwowed up."
- Roderick Clyne, Singapore

5.0 out of 5 stars Daft auld Bear!, 19 May 2009
A fantastic "translation" of A. A. Milne's classic children's book Winnie-the-Pooh into Scots. Rediscover the tales of your childhood, made even funnier and more endearing by the Scottish pronunciation. I have very much enjoyed remembering all the old stories and jokes, and the Scottish is a constant source of laughter. The original illustrations by E. H. Shepard are also included, and the "translation" is entirely true to the original text. Sounds best when read aloud - this makes brilliant bedtime stories for children, and entertains the adults too.

Extract:

"I'm wunnerin if ye wid hae sic a thing as a balloon about ye?"
....
"Whit for dae ye want a balloon?"
Winnie-the-Pooh keeked aboot tae mak shair naebody wis luggin in, pit his loof tae his mooth, and said in a laich whusper: "Hinny!"
"But ye dinna get hinny wi balloons!"
"Ah dae," said Pooh.
...
"Wid the bees no see you unner the balloon?"
"Mibbes aye, mibbes naw," said Winnie-the-Pooh. "Ye canna aye tell wi bees."
