Product Description

Product Description
"Continuum Impacts" are seminal works by some of the finest minds in Western thought that created a storm when they were first published, and continue to resonate in this new series. Strikingly designed to complement the controversial nature of the thoughts within, "Impacts" are essential reading for independent thinkers everywhere. Karl May's most popular work originally published in 1892 and influenced by Harriet Beecher Stowe, "Winnetou" is the story of a young Apache chief told by his white friend and blood-brother Old Shatterhand. The action takes place in the U.S. Southwest, in the latter half of the 1800s, where the Indian way of life is threatened by the first transcontinental railroad. Winnetou, the only Native Indian chief who could have united the various rival tribes to reach a settlement with the whites, is murdered. His tragic death foreshadows the death of his people. May's central theme here, as in much of his work, is the relationship between aggression, racism, and religious intolerance.

About the Author
Karl May (1842-1912) was born in Germany to a family of poor weavers. Blind for the first six years of his life, he overcame self-doubt and despair to become one of the most successful writers of fiction in history. 70 million copies of his books have been sold in more than 20 languages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winnetou, 11 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This was one of my favrourite books when I was a child. I have read it countless times, and by the end the book was nearly in pieces. I think that it is very unfortunate that most people in England haven't even heard about it. It is also strange, as I grew up with it.

It is very simply written, but the story just grips you, and you just can't get enough, have to keep on reading until it finished.

I have actually got a very old edition which consist of 4 shorter stories, each of them telling a different part of Old Shatterhand's life.

I think it should be on everyone's bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an amazing story for readers of all ages, 1 April 2000
By A Customer
I have not read the english translation of this story so I don't know if it captures the magic of other translations. Even if the style is not captured, the storyline will keep you hooked until you've finished and then you'll wish it was longer. The story is about a young german who travels to the U.S. to find fortune and instead finds himself falling in love with the "dark and bloody west" and also finding his best friend ever to be a native American, in times when most people dismissed redskins as "savages". If this book is the same story I've read, then it actually comprises of 5 shorter stories(although each sufficiently long to make a wholesome read) that all follow on from each other and span over a number of years, describing key events in Old Shatterhand's and Winnetou's lives. One of the best aspects of this book is the way the author dramatically describes all the action in minute detail so you can imagine exactly what is happening at every second, and you know exactly how Old Shatterhand feels about everything because it's written from his first-person point of view. After you have read this I can almost guarantee that you'll want more, the trouble is, I'm not sure that the next stories in the series are available in english.

Note: The review below this one is wrong because Winnetou is not murdered by thugs- his father is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reader from Ireland/Slovakia, 16 May 2003
Winnetou and all other books of Karl May about Winnetou and Old Shatterhand were the best books which I red through my childhood. I think that each of these books tells you more than only a story, it will tell reader about friendship, understanding of others, antiracism etc.

I am strongly recommending it for everybody, young or old.

I searched for Winnetou in shops with English language literature (In the UK, Belgium, Ireland), but nobody knew about Karl May. I am so glad that I finally found it on Amazon.

I will be very happy, if I will find also other Karl May's books in English.

Thank you,
Marek
