Book Description

Megan Williams is eighteen and in love with the boy next door, Victor Evans. It is 1910 and, in the Rhondda Valley, poverty and hardship are taking their toll as troops are brought in to control the striking miners. The only work Megan can find is in a house where the police and soldiers lodge, but she is shunned by friends and neighbours, who believe she has betrayed her class by working for the enemy. Megan's father would rather see his daughter dead than married to a Catholic, particularly one whose father and brother are marked as strike ringleaders. Caught in the middle, Victor and Megan find themselves fighting for the right to love one another, remain together and build a future they can share.

5.0 out of 5 stars mrs rachel 23 April 2008
Format:Paperback
"Winners & Losers" is the second book in the series of books that focuses on the Evans' family in Tonypaddy that started with "Beggars & Choosers". The characters of Sali, Lloyd and his brothers are brought scarily alive and the books really takes you in to what it was like in the Welsh Valleys during the times of the riots. The main focus is on the character Victor Evans and his girlfriend, Megan, and how they try to make their relationship work and progress in these hard times. A fantastic read, lots of drama, romance, comedy and sadness, a great carry -on read from the first book in the series and a great development of the characters from Beggars and Choosers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Sequel 24 Mar 2005
Format:Paperback
This book follows on with the story of Sali and the Evans family. It is about the impact that the miner's strike, and subsequent riots, had on the people of the valleys in general and the Evans family in particular. The characters are vividly brought to life and the the portrayal of their lives, the difficulties they encounter in their day to day living, and the way their spirit, and strong sense of family helps them to survive, is a joy to read. It captures the way of life of the mining comunities and as I am a welsh woman who has lived in England for many years, it brought back all the homesickness I thought I had overcome.

4.0 out of 5 stars Written around real events 9 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this book as a recommendation from my Book Club and I would otherwise not have chosen it.....and missed out! I found the subject matter absorbing, especially as it related to real events. Had the book been totally fictional and not contained the historical elements that it did, the emotions I felt for the fate of the Evans family and others in the Welsh valleys, would have been lost the moment I finished the book. However, I was left feeling very strongly about the injustices metered out to the miners and their families and their utter powerlessness. Most of the characters were fictional but I imagine the hardships that they experienced were very close to reality. I enjoyed Catrin Collier's writing style and will read other novels she has written. I understand that the first novel in this series is Beggars and Choosers and I wish that had been clear in the book, as I would have read that first!
