Product Description

Product Description

Wall Street Journal columnist Christina Brinkley explores how Wynn, Kerkorian and Lovemann are building a bigger, better Las Vegas and how their influence is spreading beyond the borders of the city. Peppered with celebrity cameos, this sharp, fast-paced narrative tells the story of how billions of dollars - and an unparalleled drive for power - took three men's visions for Vegas from mere dreams to a spectacularly-lit reality.

Binkley writes about the recent history of Steve Wynn of Wynn Resorts, Kirk Kerkorian of MGM Mirage and Gary Loveman of Harrah's. They are three of the biggest names in Las Vegas and have brought about some of the biggest changes and biggest casinos to the city. This is not a comprehensive book about the history of Las Vegas and it only details the events that Wynn, Kerkorian and Loveman have been involved with and largely in the last 20 years. The majority of the book is focused on Wynn as he is obviously the brashest personality out of the three men and probably the man Binkley had most access to.

The book is packed with facts and details, especially of the obscene amounts of money that are spent in and on Las Vegas casinos! I visited Las Vegas about 3 years ago and I got a great deal out of reading about the places that I saw. It would also be a great book to read just before going there so that you can see the place in a more informed light!

While the book was obviously well researched and packed full of information, I did find the author's style a little grating at times. For example she refers to university educated individuals as "propeller heads" and does so exclusively which becomes rather irritating. She does tend to overuse some clichés There is also some occasional repetition of content and the same key quote is used at the start of two chapters.

I enjoyed learning about some of the background to Las Vegas and the personalities of Wynn, Kerkorian and Loveman and despite some reservations about the author's writing style I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Las Vegas.

Great book about the building of The Bellagio and the subsequent implosion of Steve Wynns dream and recovery to the Wynn, meeting the Harrahs and MGM teams along the way but the book skips over The Venetian story which is truly bizarre.

Superb book on both Las Vegas, and the development of mega resorts. Doesn't cover Las Vegas Sands and Sheldon Adelson very much, which is a bit surprising. Could do with an updated edition really, with more coverage of Macau. Still, a really good book.
