The easy readability of this thriller/expose of modern life will make this a top seller this summer, I am sure. PC fans will love it but so too will anyone new to his work wanting a pleasant read.
Not only is this a fast moving murder story but additionally has the inimitable Paulo Coelho's philosophical studies of human nature. Many of his characters, both good and bad, are struggling to make sense of the brittle cultural and social obsessions we all know are part of our shallow modern world.
He writes warmly and brilliantly about the fake gloss that surrounds fashion, celebrity, diamonds and films in particular. Using real facts from people working in these businesses he exposes the brutal truth of these dreadful industries. The fashion world, for example, that uses very young models deluded into hoping to build a career but tosses them aside after a very short time leaving them broken and confused, often missing an education. The diamonds sold for $10 in Africa and $10 000 retail is a particularly dirty business that no one should be associated with if this book is to be believed.
I particularly liked his take on SMS (Text messaging) and the idiocy of sending messages that take 5 minutes to write but only 10 seconds to say, and it is mostly rubbish that is said anyway, but still people do it - perhaps to be fashionable with their friends.
This book is a gripping and interesting read and could well absorb even the most reluctant reader.
I wonder what Paulo will turn his attention to next? Perhaps the X factor or football, I hope so.
